reloader: default to non-root and lock provisioned datasource - #1244
The reloader image creates a non-root account but never selects it, so the long-running rule-editing service still runs as root. Select its existing UID 1000/GID 2000 in both image recipes. Also make all three current k8s datasource sources non-editable, consistent with sibling datasource definitions.
Prepare the matching rule ownership during initialization, rather than relying on a one-time PVC migration or fsGroup. Both TiDB and DM initializer paths now prepare the active rule directory and current-version persistence directory after generating/restoring rules, on every Pod initialization. This covers fresh volumes, replacement rules emptyDirs, and existing root-owned saved rules. Changes are limited to the dedicated rule directories and their regular .yml files; unrelated Prometheus/Grafana data are not recursively chowned. Symlinks and ownership/permission failures stop initialization.
Initializer image defaults match the reloader's numeric IDs; RELOADER_UID/RELOADER_GID support explicit runtime overrides. The current generator, legacy generator and master snapshot templates are kept consistent. reload/CONTAINER_SECURITY.md documents upgrading initializer and reloader together, custom identities, the separate spec.dm.initializer configuration, and storage limitations.
For existing deployments, platform-monitoring/operator/Dockerfile.compat builds from the exact original initializer image digest, retaining its rule/dashboard assets and original initialization script. It adds the permission preparation after the original script succeeds. Publish this build in a new repository under the original tag and change only the initializer baseImage, retaining initializer.version and any explicit alertManagerRulesVersion. This preserves the unmodified Operator's persistence directory without inferring versions from PVC contents or copying rules between version directories. Do not overwrite historical image references or rebuild an old version from master assets. If changing the initializer tag intentionally, the guide documents explicitly retaining the old rules version instead.
Merge #1241 first: it supplies the secured reloader and complete-package build entrypoints. No Operator controller code change is required; update the paired images and retain authentication/TLS settings in the managed CR.
Validation:
Disposable kind v1.31.2 cluster, real Kubernetes Pods with root initializer, rules emptyDir and fresh root-owned hostPath-backed PVCs; no fsGroup. Pods reproduce the Operator v1.6.6 generated commands/environment/mount layout. The Operator controller itself was not installed.
Original initializer reproduced HTTP 500 on save and permission denial creating the persistence directory.
Fixed TiDB, DM and custom UID 1234/GID 2345 cases: save returned 200, the real Prometheus rules API showed the changed rule, persisted bytes matched, and ownership matched the runtime identity.
For each case, deleted/recreated the Pod while retaining its PVC; verified the Pod UID changed, persisted rules restored into the new emptyDir, and a second save/reload/persist succeeded.
Seeded root-owned existing persistence directories/rules, recreated the Pod, and confirmed migration plus save/reload/persistence. Compared /data and /data/prometheus ownership and permissions before/after: unchanged.
Compatibility recipe: actual Docker build confirmed the original rule/dashboard and original init-script hashes were unchanged. Original initialization and permission-preparation failures both propagated as failures.
Monitoring-only upgrade in real kind Pods: root-runtime baseline saved custom rules; changed initializer repository while retaining the same v8.5.7 tag and rule-version arguments, then switched to the non-root reloader. For both TiDB and DM, old custom rules restored automatically, save/reload/persistence passed, and a further Pod rebuild restored the edited rules and remained editable. Test images used a frozen local original-initializer fixture; no production artifact was republished. No Operator change, rule-version override, directory inference or cross-version copy was used.
Only local test images were built; no image publication or production rollout was performed. Storage that prevents initializer ownership operations, such as root-squashed NFS, requires a storage-specific initialization strategy.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Security
Monitoring rule files and directories now receive controlled ownership and permissions during initialization. Invalid paths, symlinks, or permission errors cause initialization to fail.
The reloader now runs under its configured container identity.
Changes
The Kubernetes cluster datasource is no longer editable in Grafana.
Documentation
Added guidance for upgrading compatible images, configuring identities and storage, and validating permissions after Pod recreation.

Initializer scripts now prepare active and persistent Prometheus rule paths for the reloader UID and GID. The reloader image recipes run under the configured identity. Kubernetes datasource provisioning is set to non-editable, and the container security guide documents the related configuration.
The DM and TiDB initialization paths validate reloader IDs and prepare applicable rule directories and .yml files with ownership and permissions. Tests check file modes, unrelated directory permissions, and symlink rejection.
Image recipes set the reloader UID and GID. The reloader images run with the configured identity. The compatibility recipe invokes the preserved initializer and prepares rules. The guide documents image upgrades and identity configuration.
Set datasource provisioning behavior cmd/datasource/*, monitor-snapshot/master/operator/datasources/*, platform-monitoring/operator/datasource/*, platform-monitoring/operator/Dockerfile.compat, reload/CONTAINER_SECURITY.md
Datasource provisioning sets editable to false. The compatibility recipe also changes the setting when the datasource file exists. The guide describes changing the provisioning source.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "reloader: default to non-root and lock provisioned datasource" matches the main changes in the changeset. The Dockerfiles set RELOADER_UID and RELOADER_GID and run /bin/reload as the PingCAP UID and GID, which covers the non-root default. The k8s-datasource.yaml files change the k8s-cluster datasource from editable to non-editable, which covers the datasource lock. The title omits the initializer rule-preparation logic (prepare_reloader_rules in init.sh), which is a large part of the change, but the title does not mislead about the changes it names.

Preparation covers dedicated child directories but neither verifies nor repairs traversal permissions on PROM_CONFIG_PATH or PROM_PERSISTENT_DIR. A root initializer can therefore report success for paths the new non-root reloader cannot reach.
The reloader cannot access its prepared persistent store, and persistent saves fail despite successful initialization.
This can occur when: An existing persistent volume root is owned by root with mode 0700, while its latest-rules children can be successfully chowned by the initializer.

Add a check that the Kubernetes datasource template keeps editable: false.
The datasource test in cmd/dm_rules_test.go writes its own fixture files and checks only their url: line. It does not read cmd/datasource/k8s-datasource.yaml, so a change back to editable: true would pass. Add a test that reads the repository template and asserts editable: false for k8s-cluster.

Add a test alongside the datasource checks in dm_rules_test.go that reads the
repository’s Kubernetes datasource template and verifies the k8s-cluster
datasource has editable set to false; do not rely on the generated fixture files
or their url checks.
Add a rule-permission check to the full initializer tests.
The new test calls prepare_reloader_rules directly. The full-script tests check only exit status and datasource URLs. Removing the DM call at cmd/init.sh:106, or the TiDB call at cmd/init.sh:222, would not fail any test. The same applies to the matching calls in platform-monitoring/operator/init.sh and monitor-snapshot/master/operator/init.sh. Add a mode check on the saved and active rule files after each full initializer run.

Extend the full initializer tests that invoke `prepare_reloader_rules` to verify
the expected permissions on both saved and active rule files after each run.
Cover the DM and TiDB initializer paths, including their corresponding operator
initializers, and use the permission mode established by the existing rule
setup.
The test runs the initializer as the test process's own UID and GID, and it creates the fixtures as that user. The chown calls therefore set owner and group to their current values. Removing them does not fail the test, which checks only permission bits. Owner or group assertions with the same identities would also pass without chown.
Replace the identity with a fixed UID and GID. Record each chown call through a fake chown on PATH, then assert the expected identity for each rule file and directory. This needs no privileges, and it does not need a POSIX-only syscall.Stat_t helper.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The DM preparation call selects DM_VERSION, while the new guide says DM persistence follows the top-level initializer version. If the generated reloader arguments follow that documented contract, the helper prepares a different directory from the one the newly non-root reloader writes.
Initialization can succeed while saving persistent DM rules fails with permission errors.
This can occur when: DM_VERSION and the reloader's persistent subpath differ, and the reloader's actual version directory contains existing root-owned rules.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The symlink check and privileged ownership changes are separate pathname operations. A concurrent writer can replace a checked regular file with a symlink before chown or chmod, bypassing the new rejection in all three helpers.
The root initializer can change ownership or permissions of an unrelated mounted file.
This can occur when: A replacement Pod initializes on a shared writable volume while another process can modify the same rules directory.

Make the new test set the fixture mode explicitly.
os.WriteFile(..., 0444) applies the process umask. Under umask 077, the fixture becomes 0400. The helper's chmod u+rw,go-w,a-x then leaves it at 0600, so the test's 0644 check fails. Add an os.Chmod call after each fixture write so the input mode does not depend on the umask.

Move the symlink checks ahead of every copy, replacement, and delete.
prepare_reloader_rules rejects symlinks only after the initializer has copied, rewritten, or deleted files. cp -f writes through a symlink at the destination, so a symlinked rules/dm_worker.rules.yml sends the rule content to its target before the check runs. The TiDB rules branch also runs rm -rf on rules/* before the check. Run the path and file-type checks before these operations in all three init scripts.

Bump the datasource provisioning version for the non-editable change.
Grafana rejects a provisioned update whose version is lower than the stored datasource version. A datasource that a user edited to stored version 2 keeps editable: true after this image redeploys with version: 1. For datasources that were already edited, set the provisioning version above the stored version in the three k8s-datasource.yaml sources and in the compatibility build.

Superseded by #1245. The replacement supports old initializers by preparing rule permissions in /bin/reload before dropping privileges and execing the service. No paired initializer upgrade, rule-version override or compatible-image repository is required. Actual published v8.5.7 initializer and Pod rebuild/save/reload/persistence were verified; new initializers also support fully non-root startup.

Initializer image defaults match the reloader's numeric IDs;

If changing the initializer tag intentionally, the guide documents explicitly retaining the old rules version instead.Merge #1241 first: it supplies the secured reloader and complete-package build entrypoints.
