reloader: drop privileges without breaking existing rule persistence - #1245
The reloader currently serves as root, while directly switching the image user breaks editing of rules produced by old initializers. Keep the existing deployment workflow: /bin/reload prepares only the dedicated rule directories, drops privileges and execs before loading web credentials or serving. Existing initializer images remain supported; automatic current-version restore and rule-version selection are unchanged. Replaces #1243 and #1244.
Preserve existing file/directory groups and existing Pod supplementary groups, including fsGroup (also group 0). Setgid on rule directories makes atomic saves inherit the existing group. Respect explicit runAsGroup. Only ownership UID is migrated; process capabilities are removed, with no_new_privs retained. No root supervisor remains. Under the actual serving identity, check directory access; if an admin account enables editing, check whether original file metadata can be preserved before listening. Watch-only/viewer-only deployments keep their read-only access requirements. Never grant extra groups based on file contents. Read-only watch-only mounts need no metadata writes.
Current TiDB/DM initializers prepare permissions when running as root, preserving volume groups. Non-root initializers do not chown/chmod existing paths, which also preserves setgid when migrating an existing PVC to fully non-root startup. Both normal and explicit fsGroup0 same-PVC transitions were verified. TiDB clears and installs base rules; the subsequent DM initializer preserves them and adds/restores DM rules in the shared directory. Restore accepts custom/hidden rule names; invalid paths, symbolic/hard links, non-regular files and copy failures are rejected. Symlink ancestors are rejected before rule mutations. Provisioned k8s datasources are non-editable.
No restore opt-in, mandatory paired initializer upgrade, new CR field, compatible-image repository or cross-version rule discovery/migration is introduced. Authentication/TLS comes from merged #1241 and atomic saves from #1242.
Validation:
Exported StatefulSets, commands/args, environment, volumes, security contexts, services, Secrets and ConfigMaps directly from the production v1.6.6 Operator factories (not a handwritten PodSpec). Ran the actual StatefulSet controller in a disposable kind v1.31.2 cluster with the example's Prometheus v2.27.1 and Grafana v7.5.11; enabled the existing EnableAlertRules setting for alert verification.
Tested default TiDB, shared TiDB+DM, fsGroup1234 and fsGroup0 with PVC root0770/rules0640, explicit UID1234 non-root initializers/reloader without extra env overrides, explicit runAsGroup4321, and ephemeral data volumes. For each: baseline save, reloader-only rolling upgrade, Pod rebuild, initializer upgrade, another rebuild; checked authenticated HTTPS saves, both Prometheus rule loading and exact persistence bytes. Ephemeral volumes were tested without assuming durability across Pod rebuilds.
On the same default PVC, migrated bootstrap -> explicit UID1000/GID2000 non-root initializer and reloader, rebuilt the Pod, and confirmed restore/edit/reload/persistence without new envs. Tested initializer tag upgrades with an explicit old alertManagerRulesVersion pin and without it; version-selection behavior and old PVC contents were preserved. Restricted fsGroup deployment also passed rollback to the old root-runtime reloader.
Final binary with the actual published pingcap/tidb-monitor-initializer:v8.5.7: Operator-generated StatefulSet upgrade, authenticated editing/reload/persistence and Pod rebuild restore passed.
Three-source full-script regressions cover TiDB->DM order, fresh/saved rules, replacement emptyDirs, hidden/custom names, unsafe source/destination links and symlink ancestors; the original shared-directory regression fails before the fix. Linux root-container tests cover actual ownership preparation, group preservation, setgid/sticky behavior, irreversible UID/GID/capability drop, volume supplementary groups and unsupported owner/group fail-fast. Tests also passed under umask077.
Watch-only read-only mount: old PR head failed EROFS; fixed image ran as non-root. An inaccessible root0700 PVC stops startup before listening. Native race/vet and Linux arm64/amd64/Windows builds passed. Independent read-only review found no remaining blocking issue.
Limits: compatibility startup is briefly root and does not satisfy a non-root Docker USER scanner. Custom owner/group arrangements must permit atomic metadata preservation; incompatible ones fail early with an actionable error. Root-only credentials must be readable by the serving identity. Root-squashed storage still requires prepared permissions. Existing custom rules retain their trust status; historical malicious changes cannot be inferred automatically. Tested hostPath-backed PVCs; no real CSI driver, full Operator controller reconciliation, image publication or production rollout was performed.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Saved rules for the selected version are restored automatically, including hidden and unbundled rule files. TiDB initialization clears stale active rules before installing bundled rules; DM initialization preserves existing TiDB rules.
Rule files and directories are prepared for the reloader. Startup stops if paths or files fail validation or preparation.
Container images configure the reloader user ID, and the reloader prepares legacy rule volumes before running with reduced privileges.
Changes
Provisioned Kubernetes Grafana datasources are no longer editable.
Documentation
Added guidance on rule persistence, reloader identity, and storage permissions.
Resolve them on the pull request, or post @coderabbitai approve as a new top-level comment to resolve them and request approval.

Walkthrough
Initializer scripts now validate, restore, and prepare rule files for the reloader. The reloader prepares rule paths and drops privileges before starting its server. Container identity settings, datasource editability, tests, workflow configuration, and security documentation are also updated.
Initializer scripts validate rule paths and files, restore version-specific rules, and prepare ownership and permissions for the reloader. Tests cover restoration, permissions, and rejected file types. The workflow runs the related tests, and initializer images set RELOADER_UID from PINGCAP_UID. The security document describes rule persistence and permissions.
The reloader prepares rule paths before serving and drops privileges when it starts as root. When the policy has admins, startup checks rule access for editing. Tests cover path checks and process identity.
Provisioned datasource editability
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Make provisioned datasources non-editable cmd/datasource/k8s-datasource.yaml, monitor-snapshot/master/operator/datasources/k8s-datasource.yaml, platform-monitoring/operator/datasource/k8s-datasource.yaml, reload/CONTAINER_SECURITY.md
The three k8s-cluster datasource configurations set editable to false. The security documentation says to change provisioned settings at their source.

Explanation
The title "reloader: drop privileges without breaking existing rule persistence" matches the main change. The PR objectives say the reloader drops privileges after preparing rule directories on Linux, and the changes keep existing rule persistence working. The changeset includes reload/identity/identity_linux.go with Prepare and CheckWritable, privilege dropping that switches UID/GID and sets NO_NEW_PRIVS, and initializer changes (init.sh, cmd/init.sh) that restore persisted rules. The title is concise and specific, and it names the primary change.

Add an ownership-transfer case to TestPreparePaths.
TestPreparePaths passes the current UID and GID to preparePaths. setOwnerMode calls Chown only when the owner differs from the target, so the Chown branch at reload/identity/identity_linux.go:103-107 does not run in this test. No other inspected test calls identity.Prepare or preparePaths with a different target owner. Removing that Chown call can leave the suite passing.
Add a root-gated case that calls preparePaths with a distinct UID and GID, such as 1000 and 2000 as in TestDropAndExec. The case can skip when os.Geteuid() != 0. After the call, assert that the rule file and each prepared rule directory have the target owner. Use syscall.Stat_t from os.Stat to read Uid and Gid.

Add a root-only owner check for the initializer's chown calls.
TestInitializerPreparesRuleAccess sets RELOADER_UID and RELOADER_GID to the test process's own IDs. Its fixtures already have that owner. The chown calls in prepare_reloader_rules therefore change nothing, and the mode assertions still pass without them.
Add a test that skips unless os.Geteuid() == 0:
Create the fixtures as root. Assert that they are still owned by 0:0 before the script runs.
Set RELOADER_UID and RELOADER_GID to a distinct non-root pair, such as 10001:10002.
Run prepare_reloader_rules for each init.sh copy. Reuse the script-loading approach of the existing test.
Assert the owner only on the paths the function prepares: the active rules directory, the latest-rules directory, the version directory under latest-rules, and the *.yml files in the active and version directories. Do not assert the owner of data or of the active config directory. The function does not change them.
Put the owner lookup that uses syscall.Stat_t in a file with //go:build linux. Do not add it to cmd/dm_rules_test.go. That file has no build constraint, and syscall.Stat_t does not exist on Windows, so the package would fail to compile there.

- Line 112: Update setOwnerMode to compare the current mode with the computed
target mode and return without calling Chmod when they already match; preserve
the existing Chmod behavior when they differ so identity.Prepare can proceed on
read-only mounts when no mode change is needed.
- Around line 54-58: Update identity.Prepare to verify that the configured store
root is traversable by the pingcap identity before the privilege drop, using the
existing openDirectory check or an established equivalent. Return an error if
the root is missing or inaccessible so startup fails before the save handler can
encounter the failure.
- Line 76: Reject any `..` component in the raw path in `openDirectory` before
cleaning or opening components, so preparation cannot resolve a different
directory than the raw path used by the watcher and API handlers. Preserve the
existing absolute, non-root path validation and `O_NOFOLLOW` protections.
- Around line 103-104: Establish whether existing rule files and directories
must retain their current group or be reassigned to the reloader GID, then apply
that ownership policy consistently in setOwnerMode and prepare_reloader_rules.
If preserving groups, change ownership preparation to avoid replacing them; if
reassignment is intended, ensure the resulting permissions preserve access for
readers outside that group, including restrictive-mode files and directories.
Review comments at @reload/main.go:
- Line 44: Update the deployment security documentation to state that mounted
web credentials must be readable by the serving identity and that root-only
credential modes prevent startup. Remove the claim that this change adds no web
configuration requirements and replace the suggestion that access adjustments
may be needed with the required outcome; keep the documented default serving UID
and GID accurate. This requirement applies after identity.Prepare drops
privileges and the replacement process starts.

Do not check or create store directories when the writable check is off.
Prepare calls checkPaths(..., false) on every non-root start, including after the exec. checkPaths then adds latest-rules and latest-rules/<version> whenever version != "". Line 227 passes create = i > 0, so a read-only check also runs Mkdirat in the store.
The store paths matter only when administrators can edit rules. main.go calls CheckWritable only in that case, and without an administrator the API is disabled.
Take a non-root Pod with --sub-store-path set, no administrator, and a store root that is missing, read-only, or root-owned. Mkdirat or Openat then fails, and log.Fatalf in main.go stops startup. Before this change, the MkdirAll failure in startServer was only logged, and the watch-only reloader kept serving.
Add the store paths only for the writable check. CheckWritable still covers them for administrators.
