Adds a sandboxed write_goal WASM tool plus the shared goal-task prompt (src/agent/goal_prompt.zig).

  • tools/zig/write_goal.zig + tools/manifests/write_goal.tool.json: turn a rough natural-language intent into a structured goal draft without consulting a model; inspects state/goals.json first and refuses to duplicate an open goal that already covers the intent.
  • src/agent/goal_prompt.zig: single source of truth for the goal-task prompt, shared by the CLI and TUI goal submission.
  • src/cli.zig / src/main.zig: wire the shared prompt into clanker goal <intent>.

Path-scoped to the write-goal feature only.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a goal-authoring tool that converts an intent into a structured goal draft.
    • Drafts include key goal details, unanswered fields, defaults, and Markdown output.
    • The tool can ask up to four clarifying questions or proceed using reasonable assumptions.
    • Existing open goals are detected to help prevent duplicates.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Automatic goal steering now runs only when both goal support and its configuration setting are enabled.
    • Explicitly selected goals continue to work independently.

Review Change Stack

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This change centralizes structured goal prompts, integrates them with CLI and API goal steering, and adds a draft-only write_goal tool with bounded questioning, duplicate detection, and JSON/Markdown output.

Changes

Goal drafting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Goal prompt contract and integration
src/agent/goal_prompt.zig, src/cli.zig, src/main.zig
Adds the canonical five-field prompt renderer and tests. CLI goal execution uses the renderer, and automatic steering also checks goal_auto_steer.
Draft model and tool contract
tools/manifests/write_goal.tool.json, tools/zig/write_goal.zig
Defines the draft-only tool contract, goal data model, intent analysis, question ordering, question limits, and defaults.
Questioning and draft execution
tools/zig/write_goal.zig
Adds the exported tool entry point, ask_user routing, duplicate detection, draft assembly, unresolved-field tracking, and JSON/Markdown emission.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Mergeability Score: 🟠 High · up to 9bbb4

This change adds structured goal drafting, but the current implementation can emit records the goal workflow cannot consume, reject legitimate new goals, and return misleading or incomplete duplicate results; the shared instruction integration also requires fixes before it is safe to merge.

One new config flag now gates automatic goal steering on both run paths. Both sites add cfg.modules.goal_auto_steer to the auto-steer condition. The shared root cause is the flag's declaration and default: if it is missing from config.Modules the build fails, and if it defaults to false every existing installation stops steering runs by the newest active goal, which leaves goals stuck in active because no run reaches the active → review transition.

  • src/cli.zig#L3034-L3044: confirm modules.goal_auto_steer exists and defaults to true, then update the comment on lines 3035-3036, which still says steering happens "when the goal module is on".
  • src/cli.zig#L10047-L10058: keep this condition identical to the CLI site once the default is decided, and document the flag so an operator can restore the previous behaviour.

fields duplicates the draft.Field enum order and can drift from it.

The array restates the five enum tags, and assemble indexes vals and answers by @intFromEnum. If a tag is added to draft.Field and not to this array, assemble silently skips it while field_count still sizes the arrays, so the new field reads uninitialised memory from vals.

Derive the list instead, so the two cannot disagree.

Collapse the repeated catch return lib.fail(out, "emit") into one error path.

emit repeats the same catch on about forty consecutive lines. The failure message is always "emit", so a failure gives no indication of which field failed. The function already returns an error union, so the writes can use try inside a helper and one catch at the call site.

This also removes the risk that a future field is added without its catch, which would change the function's error behaviour silently.

♻️ Proposed shape
fn emit(out: *lib.Out, d: draft.Draft, md: []const u8, questions_asked: usize) !void {
    var w = lib.writer(out);
    var s = lib.json(&w);
    writeRecord(&s, d, md, questions_asked) catch return lib.fail(out, "could not encode the draft record");
    lib.commit(out, &w);
}

/// Every write uses `try`; the single caller maps any failure to one refusal.
fn writeRecord(s: anytype, d: draft.Draft, md: []const u8, questions_asked: usize) !void {
    try s.beginObject();
    try s.objectField("ok");
    try s.write(true);
    // ... remaining fields, all with `try`

- Around line 369-385: Update the Draft construction around the assumptions and

duplicate response.
- Around line 455-479: Update duplicateGoalId to inspect each goal’s status and

duplicates; skip done, archived, and abandoned entries. Replace overlap’s
case-insensitive substring checks and 4096-byte truncation with token-based
similarity that requires a minimum token count and a sufficient overlap ratio,
so short phrases and long-prefix matches do not block legitimate goals.
- Around line 209-248: Extract the draft logic and its tests from write_goal

host_tested_helpers and wire it into zig build test so the five-fork and
markdown tests execute.
- Around line 413-447: Update the record emitted by write_goal to match the goal
input schema: emit completion_criterion, proof, boundaries, and stop_rule as
strings rather than the plural array fields and execution_loop object-style
structure. Preserve the corresponding values from d.completion_criterion,
d.proof, d.boundaries, and d.stop_rule, or add an explicit manifest translation
before passing the record to goal.
- Around line 267-271: Update the max_q calculation in the max_questions block
to clamp the truncated value to the documented range of 1 through 4. Ensure
values below 1 become 1 before enforcing the existing upper bound of 4, so
chooseQuestions never receives zero.

Zig 0.16 std.fs.Dir.readFileAlloc signature std.fs.cwd readFileAlloc

💡 Result:

In Zig 0.16, the file system API underwent significant changes [1][2]. The previous std.fs.cwd() and its associated methods were removed or refactored [2][3]. Filesystem operations, including readFileAlloc, are now accessed via std.Io.Dir [2][4]. The signature for readFileAlloc in Zig 0.16 is [5]: dir.readFileAlloc(io, sub_path, allocator, limit) Parameters: - io: An std.Io instance (typically passed to main via std.process.Init) [2][6]. - sub_path: A []const u8 representing the file path [7][2]. - allocator: An std.mem.Allocator used to allocate the returned buffer [7][6]. - limit: An std.Io.Limit (e.g., .limited(n) or .unlimited) to prevent excessive memory allocation [5][8][6]. Usage Pattern: To use this in Zig 0.16, you typically obtain a directory handle (such as the current working directory) and perform the operation by passing the I/O context [2][6]: const cwd = std.Io.Dir.cwd; const content = try cwd.readFileAlloc(io, "filename.txt", allocator,.limited(1024 * 1024)); defer allocator.free(content); Note that the limit parameter now enforces a stricter check, returning error.StreamTooLong if the limit is reached or exceeded [5].

Zig 0.16 std.fs.cwd readFileAlloc API signature std.Io.Dir.readFileAlloc

💡 Result:

In Zig 0.16, the file system API underwent significant changes as part of the transition to the std.Io interface [1][2]. The legacy direct filesystem operations, such as calling readFileAlloc directly on std.fs.cwd, have been replaced [3][4][2]. Instead, you must use std.Io.Dir [3]. Operations like readFileAlloc now require an explicit Io instance (provided by std.process.Init) to handle the I/O operations [3][5][2]. The API signature for readFileAlloc on std.Io.Dir is [3][5]: pub fn readFileAlloc( dir: Dir, io: std.Io, sub_path: []const u8, gpa: Allocator, limit: Io.Limit,) ReadFileAllocError![]u8 Key usage differences in Zig 0.16 include [6][3]: 1. Explicit Io Instance: Every file operation now requires the io instance as the first argument [3][2]. 2. Argument Order: The order of arguments has changed compared to previous versions [3]. 3. Limit Handling: The size limit is now passed as an Io.Limit type (e.g.,.limited(n) or.unlimited) rather than a raw integer [6][7][5]. 4. std.fs.cwd replacement: Use std.Io.Dir.cwd to obtain the directory handle, which then requires the io parameter for subsequent calls [3][5][2]. Example usage: const cwd = std.Io.Dir.cwd; const contents = try cwd.readFileAlloc(io, "example.txt", allocator,.limited(1024 * 1024)); defer allocator.free(contents);

Zig 0.16 std.Io.Dir.readFileAlloc signature and whether std.fs.cwd().readFileAlloc still exists

💡 Result:

In Zig 0.16, the file system API underwent significant changes as part of a transition where standard library file I/O operations moved to std.Io.Dir [1]. Consequently, std.fs.cwd() and the associated std.fs.Dir functionality (including the old readFileAlloc) have been removed or moved [2][1]. The std.fs.cwd() function no longer exists; you should instead use std.Io.Dir.cwd() to obtain a directory handle [1]. For the current std.Io.Dir.readFileAlloc (or its equivalent on the Dir type), the signature requires the path, the allocator, and an Io.Limit [3][4][1]. The argument order was updated to: dir.readFileAlloc(sub_path, allocator, limit) Example usage in Zig 0.16: const cwd = std.Io.Dir.cwd; const content = try cwd.readFileAlloc(io_handle, "path/to/file", allocator,.limited(1024 * 1024)); defer allocator.free(content); Note that in many contexts, these new I/O operations also require passing an Io object (often obtained from std.process.Init) as an argument [5][1]. As of 0.16, the previous std.fs file I/O APIs are deprecated or removed in favor of this new std.Io infrastructure [2][1].

Fix the Zig 0.16 file-read call and align the skill assertions.

  • Replace std.fs.cwd().readFileAlloc(...) with std.Io.Dir.cwd().readFileAlloc(io, path, allocator, .limited(1 << 20)).
  • Update the assertions because skills/write-goal.md contains neither the exact field_list string nor the unformatted text call the goal tool once; it uses separate bullets and call the `goal` tool once.

Remove the unnecessary "llm": true flag.

write_goal does not call lib.llm or another model helper. "sequential": true already satisfies the model-caller scheduling rule. Keep "tool_call": true, "tool_allow": ["ask_user"], "fs_prefixes": ["state/goals.json"], and "category": "goal"; the loader and validator recognize these keys, and the file prefix grants the required path.

Zig @truncbuiltin return type float, converting f64 to u32@intFromFloat``

💡 Result:

In Zig, the @trunc builtin function returns the same type as its operand [1]. When you pass a floating-point number (such as f64) to @trunc, it returns a value of the same floating-point type (f64) that has been rounded toward zero [2][1]. When converting a float to an integer using @intFromFloat(value), the result type must be explicitly known (e.g., u32) [3]. Since @intFromFloat requires the floating-point value to have no fractional part, using @trunc before the conversion is a common pattern to ensure the value is a whole number [2]. Example usage: const my_float: f64 = 3.7; const truncated_float = @trunc(my_float); // Returns 3.0 (type f64) const my_int: u32 = @intFromFloat(truncated_float); // Result is 3 (type u32) Note that @intFromFloat performs safety checks; if the value cannot fit into the destination integer type or contains a fractional part, it may trigger illegal behavior [4][5]. Using @trunc (or @round, @floor, @ceil) explicitly prepares the value for a safe conversion by removing the fractional component [2].

Zig language reference @truncreturn type implicit float to integer conversion@intFromFloat behavior NaN out of range

💡 Result:

In Zig, the conversion of floating-point values to integers is handled primarily through the built-in @intFromFloat function [1]. Behavior of @intFromFloat: - Safety Constraints: The function @intFromFloat is defined as having detectable illegal behavior if the floating-point value's integer part cannot fit into the destination integer type [2][1]. - Out of Range / NaN: When the input value is outside the representable range of the destination integer type, or if the value is NaN (Not-a-Number), the operation triggers a runtime panic [3][2][4]. The standard error message encountered is generally "integer part of floating point value out of bounds" [3][2][4]. - Implicit Conversion: There is no implicit conversion from float to integer in Zig. You must use explicit built-ins like @intFromFloat [1]. Relationship with @trunc: - @trunc: The @trunc built-in performs a rounding operation toward zero, returning the nearest representable integer to the operand [5]. - Combining @trunc and @intFromFloat: Using @intFromFloat(@trunc(x)) explicitly expresses an intent to truncate the fractional part before converting to an integer [5]. When this pattern is used, the compiler may optimize the operation into a single machine instruction if the target architecture supports it, and in some contexts, it can eliminate the need for redundant safety checks regarding fractional parts [5]. - Evolution: Recent developments in the language have aimed to clarify and expand the support for rounding built-ins (@round, @trunc, @floor, @ceil) to handle integer operands directly, alongside ongoing efforts to refine how these operations interact with type casting [5][6]. For scenarios requiring non-panicking, lossy conversion (such as wrapping or clamping behavior), developers typically implement custom logic using standard library tools or by manipulating the bits, as the built-in @intFromFloat is strictly checked [1][7].

Zig 0.16 language reference @trunc @intFromFloat implicit float integer conversion official documentation

💡 Result:

In Zig 0.16, the @intFromFloat builtin has been deprecated because it is rendered redundant by updates to @trunc, @floor, @ceil, and @round [1][2]. These four unary float functions now support direct conversion to integer types, handling the conversion by returning the integer result directly rather than requiring a separate cast [1][3]. Key changes in Zig 0.16 regarding float-to-integer conversion include: 1. Deprecation of @intFromFloat: The @intFromFloat builtin is deprecated and effectively replaced by using one of the rounding builtins (e.g., @trunc) when an integer result type is required [1][4][5]. 2. Enhanced Rounding Builtins: When their result type is an integer, @floor, @ceil, @round, and @trunc now perform the conversion to that integer type directly [3][2]. - @trunc: Returns the integer part, rounding towards zero [3]. - @floor: Rounds towards negative infinity [3]. - @ceil: Rounds towards positive infinity [3]. - @round: Rounds to the nearest integer, with ties broken away from zero [3]. 3. Behavior with Integers: When these functions are used with an integer result type, they apply a saturating effect where values outside the target integer's range are clamped [3]. NaN values are illegal in this context [3]. 4. Implicit Conversions: Zig 0.16 allows implicit type coercion for small integer types (e.g., u8) to floating-point types (e.g., f32) if the destination type can losslessly store all possible values of the source integer type [1][5][6]. However, float-to-integer conversion remains explicit and must be performed via the aforementioned builtins [3][4]. Migration example: // Deprecated way const n: u8 = @intFromFloat(value); // Correct Zig 0.16 way (truncating towards zero) const n: u8 = @trunc(value);

site:ziglang.org/download/0.16.0/release-notes.html @trunc integer result saturating NaN

💡 Result:

In the Zig programming language, @trunc is a built-in function used to convert floating-point values to integers by truncating toward zero [1]. When using @trunc for this conversion, it does not have a "saturating" mode that handles NaN (Not-a-Number) values by returning a specific integer constant. Instead, converting a floating-point NaN to an integer via @trunc is considered undefined behavior in Zig, as NaN cannot be represented as an integer [1]. Consequently, developers must ensure the input is not NaN before performing the conversion to avoid undefined behavior [2][3].

🌐 Web query:

site:ziglang.org/documentation/0.16.0 @trunc @intFromFloat``

💡 Result:

In the Zig programming language, @intFromFloat and @trunc are distinct built-in functions used for different purposes when handling floating-point numbers. @intFromFloat This built-in function is used to perform a type conversion from a floating-point type to an integer type. It performs a truncation of the fractional part and returns the integer portion. If the floating-point value cannot be represented exactly within the target integer type, this operation is generally considered unsafe or undefined depending on the specific context of the value; it is intended for cases where the conversion is known to be valid. @trunc While @trunc is commonly understood in programming contexts as a function that removes the fractional part of a floating-point number (returning a floating-point type), Zig primarily utilizes specialized built-in operations for division and specific math functions. Please note that direct documentation references for a built-in named @trunc in Zig were not found in the provided search results. Users typically perform truncation of floats in Zig by converting to an integer type using @intFromFloat, or by using functions provided in the standard library (std.math) for floating-point manipulation. Summary of differences: - @intFromFloat is a type conversion built-in that casts a float to an integer type. - The term @trunc does not correspond to a standard Zig built-in function in the documentation provided; equivalent floating-point truncation behavior is achieved through type casting or standard library math functions.

Zig 0.16 release notes "The rounding functions" @trunc``

💡 Result:

In Zig 0.16.0, the builtin function @trunc (along with @floor, @ceil, and @round) received significant updates to improve floating-point to integer conversion [1][2]. Key changes in Zig 0.16.0 regarding @trunc include: Direct Integer Conversion: @trunc now supports converting floating-point values directly to integer types [1][3]. Deprecation of @intFromFloat: Because @trunc can now perform this conversion, the @intFromFloat builtin is considered redundant and has been deprecated [1]. Saturating Behavior: When using @trunc to convert to an integer, the operation has a saturating effect [3]. Values outside the target integer's representable range are clamped, and NaN values are considered illegal [3]. Consistency: If the result type is non-integer, the behavior of @trunc remains unchanged from previous versions, returning a float [1][3]. These changes were motivated by a desire to reduce friction in floating-point to integer conversions, particularly for use cases like game development, and to allow for the removal of std.math.lossyCast [3].

site:github.com/ziglang/zig/issues/19575 "@trunc" integer saturating

💡 Result:

In the context of programming, particularly within the Zig language, the term @trunc (truncate) when applied to integer conversion is often associated with saturating behavior [1]. Truncation is a rounding method that converts a floating-point number to an integer by rounding toward zero [1]. Saturating arithmetic is a method of handling numeric overflow or out-of-bounds values by clamping the result to the maximum or minimum representable value of the destination integer type, rather than wrapping or causing an error [1]. When these concepts are combined, as in the updated Zig language builtins, a function like @trunc performing a saturating conversion will behave as follows: 1. Truncation: The fractional part of the floating-point value is discarded, effectively rounding toward zero [1]. 2. Saturation: If the resulting value is outside the representable range of the target integer type, it is clamped to the nearest boundary (i.e., std.math.minInt(T) or std.math.maxInt(T)) instead of overflowing [1]. This is distinct from standard casting, which may cause undefined behavior, panic, or wrap around if the value exceeds the bounds of the destination type [1]. In implementations where this is supported, it provides a safe, predictable way to perform lossy conversions [1].

Clamp max_questions to the documented range. In Zig 0.16, @trunc converts to the u32 result type. Values below 1 become 0; chooseQuestions then asks no questions and fills every field with defaults. Clamp the lower bound to 1 before applying the upper bound of 4.

{gid} is never substituted; the duplicate message shows the literal placeholder.

Lines 287-295 are a multiline raw string literal. Zig does not interpolate values in string literals. The emitted markdown therefore contains the characters `{gid}` instead of the goal id, so the user is told a duplicate exists but is never told which goal.

This branch also omits record and questions_asked. The manifest llm_description promises {ok, duplicate, existing_goal_id, record:{...}, markdown}, so a consumer that reads record unconditionally gets a missing key on the duplicate path. Either emit record: null and questions_asked: 0, or correct the declared output shape in the manifest.

A covered fork copies the whole intent into the field, so up to four fields hold identical text.

When intentAnswers returns true, line 359 sets the field to the full intent string. intentAnswers(.proof, ...) delegates to criterionHint, so completion_criterion and proof are always covered together and both receive the same sentence. objectiveHint matches on very common markers such as " is " and " must ", so objective frequently receives the same sentence too.

The tool's stated purpose is a structured draft. A record whose objective, completion_criterion, proof, and boundaries are the same paragraph is not structured, and a reviewer cannot tell which part of the intent supports which field.

Consider marking these fields as "derived from the intent" and listing them in unresolved, rather than copying the intent verbatim into each one.

assumptions and unresolved are copies of the same list, so both fields lose their meaning.

Lines 373-374 @memcpy the same open[0..n_open] into both slices. The record then reports one list twice under two names, and renderMarkdown prints the same entries under "Assumed (no human answer)" and "Still open". The doc comment on lines 44-46 distinguishes the two: assumptions is what was filled by default, unresolved is what remains open.

The entries are also bare field names, so the markdown reads - objective under "Assumed". Record the applied default text in assumptions, and keep unresolved as the field names, or drop one of the two fields.

Align the emitted record with the goal input schema.

write_goal emits completion_criteria, verification, execution_loop, and stop_rules. The goal tool accepts completion_criterion, proof, boundaries, and stop_rule as strings. No record translation exists. Rename and flatten these fields, or define the translation in the manifest before handing the record to goal.

Duplicate detection ignores goal status and matches far too loosely, so it will block legitimate goals.

Two defects combine here.

  1. duplicateGoalId inspects every entry in state/goals.json. It never reads status. src/cli.zig StoredGoal defines the statuses active, review, done, archived, and abandoned. A done or archived goal therefore blocks a new draft, which contradicts the documented behaviour "an already-open goal".

  2. overlap returns true when either string contains the other, after lowercasing. A short stored objective is a substring of many unrelated intents. A stored objective of improve the repl matches any intent containing that phrase, and a stored objective of tests matches any intent mentioning tests. The result is a false duplicate and a refused draft with no way to override.

overlap also truncates both inputs at 4096 bytes and then compares the truncated forms, so a long objective can match on a prefix alone.

Consider filtering to open statuses, and replacing containment with a token-overlap ratio plus a minimum token count.
