webui: stop appending each skill card into its own checkbox - #269
Conversation
loadSkills' per-skill callback declared its checkbox as 'var box', shadowing the #skills container, so the closing box.appendChild(card) appended the card into its own checkbox: a DOM hierarchy cycle the browser refuses. The throw landed in the fetch chain's catch, so any non-empty skills list rendered 'Could not load skills.' with a Try again that reran the same failure; only an empty list ever displayed. The checkbox is 'check' now and the card lands in the container. ui/app/core/skills.test.mjs (new, wired into zig build test) drives the shipped loadSkills over the DOM stub; it fails against the old code and passes now. Also records docs/reports/investigations/2026-08-18-bounded-chat-abort-test-hangs.md: zig build test intermittently parks forever at 0% CPU in llm.client's bounded-chat abort test, confirmed on pristine main by a control worktree.

| - **Question:** llm.client's 'bounded chat aborts a provider that never sends a response' (client.zig:1624) intermittently never returns: the test binary sits at ~0% CPU indefinitely. Seen twice in four otherwise-green runs of one tree on 2026-08-18 (arm64 macOS), once for 3 hours. Suspect: the 2026-08-17 request watchdog sometimes fails to unblock the parked read. Recovery: kill the test binary (match by cwd) and rerun. | ||

Refresh the TL;DR after the August 19, 2026 control run.
Line 5 records two hangs in four runs on August 18, 2026. Line 40 adds a later result: four hangs in four runs on a64bd7e2, and reruns no longer converge. The TL;DR is now stale. Mark it as an August 18 snapshot or update it with the August 19 result.

Align the report body with its section structure.
Trigger and scope, Hypotheses and tests, Finding, Resolution or handoff, and References are empty. The run evidence is appended under a second ## Evidence heading at Line 26. Move the content into the intended sections and keep one ## Evidence heading. This also resolves the reported MD024 violation.

The Skills list (Tools/Prompts views) has been dead for anyone with at least one file under
skills/: it always rendered "Could not load skills." with a Try again that reran the identical failure. One shadowed variable:
loadSkillsreads the container asvar box = document.getElementById("skills"), and the per-skill callback declared its checkbox asvar box = document.createElement("input"). The closingbox.appendChild(card)therefore appended the card into its own checkbox — a hierarchy cycle the DOM refuses withHierarchyRequestError. The throw landed in the fetch chain's.catch, so a rendering bug spent its whole life dressed as a network failure; only an empty skills list ever drew. The checkbox ischecknow, and the card lands in the container.Verified:
ui/app/core/skills.test.mjs(new, wired intozig build test) drives the shippedloadSkillssource overlib/dom-stub.mjswith a stubbed fetch — control run against the unfixed code fails (zero cards reach the container), the fixed code renders both cards with each checkbox inside its card, and the empty state still works. Also ships
docs/reports/investigations/2026-08-18-bounded-chat-abort-test-hangs.md:zig build testintermittently parks forever at ~0% CPU inllm.client's bounded-chat abort test (client.zig:1624). Confirmed on pristine main (a64bd7e, detached control worktree, no diff) — 4 hangs in 4 runs on this base vs 3 green runs on earlier bases the same day, so it worsened somewhere in 20fe562..a64bd7e. Recovery: kill the test binary by cwd and rerun.Gate on this branch (on a64bd7e):
