Upstream roll-up required before OpenHuman can advance its gitlink. Carries commit 2d23a6a referenced by tinyhumansai/openhuman#8487. Validation: source commit verified; tests were not run for this roll-up.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added local process coordination through PID-based lockfile leases.
Added read-only legacy key-file access and protected file-import, recovery, and cleanup capabilities.
Added support for decrypting legacy encoded secrets for migration.
Release assets now include a source archive and SHA-256 checksum manifest.
Bug Fixes
Improved recovery of readable secret files and handling of file-operation interruptions on Windows.
Documentation
Updated guidance on file-based secrets, local leases, and release assets.
Tests
Added coverage for leases, secret-file migration and recovery, and reproducible release assets.
Add a test asserting that the read-only key file constructor fails with an
I/O error and creates neither the key file nor its lock file when the store
does not yet exist, and that it opens an existing store without leaving a
lock file behind.

Add `with_key_file_read_only`, which opens the encrypted file store from an
existing `.secret_key` without creating the key or its lock file, so read-only
inspection paths cannot turn a missing key into a new identity. The test for the
missing-key case now expects a backend error to match the returned error kind.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The read-only key file test previously asserted that no lock file exists after opening, which only held because the writer had not yet created one. It now records whether the lock file was present beforehand and checks that opening read-only leaves that state unchanged.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add a test that decrypts a legacy enc-prefixed value with the XOR key and
checks that malformed hex and an unexpected prefix both surface as crypto
errors, so the migration path stays covered.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Adds a decrypt_legacy_enc helper that decodes the old unauthenticated
enc:<hex> XOR format so hosts can migrate existing values to enc2. The
legacy format is retained only for migration and must not be used to
protect new data.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Quarantine now re-reads and decrypts the source file before moving it
aside, returning the recovered map when the file has become valid again
so a transient corruption is not quarantined.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Disambiguate the Result::ok call in the quarantine test so it resolves to
std::result::Result rather than a shadowing Result type.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Reformatted several long assert_eq! calls in the crypto and file secrets
driver tests to wrap their arguments across multiple lines. This is a
formatting-only change with no effect on test behaviour.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Adds a Unix-only sync_parent_dir helper that opens the parent directory of a
path and syncs it, so a rename or link can be made durable after publishing a
file entry. The helper is re-exported from the crate root behind the file
feature and cfg(unix), since Windows has no equivalent directory sync.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add a hex-encoded key source for the file secrets backend and a migration
path that moves existing secrets to the new format. Tests cover both the
key source and the migration.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Re-export the hex key file source and file import helpers from the file
module and crate root so callers can use them without reaching into
private paths. The hex key source now imports ErrorKind from
tinystoragedrivers_types instead of tinystoragedrivers_core.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Switch the migration module to the sha2_11 crate and adapt the ledger
read to the tuple returned by read_private, which now yields the blob
alongside additional metadata.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The file feature now pulls in the serde dependency alongside serde_json, which the file-backed storage path needs for serialization.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The unix module's is_unlinked helper was not re-exported alongside Namespace and identity, so callers in the parent module could not reach it. Add it to the pub(super) use list.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The file import helpers are no longer part of the public surface, so their re-exports were removed from the file module and the crate root. A unix helper was added to report whether an open file has been unlinked, which the import path needs to detect replaced or removed files.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The hex key source test module is now declared inside hex_key_source.rs instead of file/mod.rs, so the tests live next to the code they cover. The migration test module declaration was dropped from mod.rs as well.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Reordered module declarations and re-exports in the file backend and crate root for consistency, and updated migration tests to reference ErrorKind from tinystoragedrivers_types instead of tinystoragedrivers_core.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The inline test module declaration was dropped from the hex key source file, so the tests are no longer compiled from this location.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Windows antivirus scanners can briefly hold files open, causing rename and
remove to fail with access denied or sharing violations. Both operations now
retry with exponential backoff on those transient error codes so secret
rotation does not fail spuriously.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
… retry loop
The retry helper now returns an io error when the operation never runs rather than hitting unreachable, so a zero-attempt configuration surfaces as a normal failure instead of a panic. A test module was also wired up for the Windows file driver.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The corruption probe now re-checks that the file's identity still matches the one recorded earlier, returning a conflict error if it changed. This prevents acting on a file that was swapped between detection and probing.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Rename the test to describe the behaviour it actually checks and drop the
second writer and restore-pause hook, so the case now asserts that a source
which becomes readable again is left in place rather than quarantined.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add a unix-only test that writes a file and calls sync_parent_dir on its
path, exercising the parent directory sync path that previously had no
direct coverage.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The quarantine restore pause test hook and its call site in the file
secrets driver were no longer used, so both were deleted to keep the
test scaffolding minimal.

…e import primitives
Clarify that the host owns secret selection, per-user naming, and migration policy while the file feature supplies protected source admission and verified import primitives. Describe the quarantine identity recheck and readable-bytes probe, the read-only key file and import helpers, and the bounded retries for transient Windows sharing violations.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Wrap the quarantine move in a test-only branch that can be forced to fail, so the error path for a failed quarantine can be exercised in tests. Production behaviour is unchanged.
Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish

Introduce a new tinystoragedrivers-fence crate that uses sysinfo to
monitor system state, along with unit tests covering its behaviour.
Cargo.lock picks up the new crate and its transitive dependencies.

The read_to_string call returns the number of bytes read, so the Ok arm now
binds it with a wildcard instead of matching the unit pattern. This keeps the

Explanation
The title "chore: roll up security migration changes" is partially related to the changeset. The PR bundles many security-migration pieces (protected hex key-file admission, verified file-import with a cleanup ledger, legacy enc: decryption, a new tinystoragedrivers-fence local PID lockfile crate, a source-archive release asset script, and release workflow changes). The title names the broad theme, but it does not say what the main change is. It also uses the generic "roll up" wording, and it does not name the fence crate, the file-import flow, or the release-asset work. The title is not unrelated, and it is not vague enough to be inconclusive. It is overly broad, so it passes as partially related.

Diagnostics and supporting details
Full summary
Pull request purpose (title): chore: roll up security migration changes. The whole pull request adds a `tinystoragedrivers-fence` crate for local PID lockfile leases, read-only admission of a registered legacy HEX key file, legacy `enc:` decryption for migration, encrypted import/recovery/conditional-cleanup primitives in the file secrets driver, a quarantine re-probe that can return recovered secrets rather than quarantine, Windows AV-transient retries on rename/remove, release source-archive plus SHA-256 checksum assets wired into `release.yml`/`ci.yml`, and documentation/workspace-inventory updates. The tests lane answered that error paths, redaction and boundary conditions are exercised by tests that would fail on regression, and identified two defects: the fence lease read path can claim ownership over a lock file it never owned, and the quarantine re-probe unconditionally returns any successfully decrypted and parsed file at the corrupt path, silently adopting a mutated or foreign file now occupying that name. The latest-push delta is unavailable, so this summary describes the whole pull request, not a push delta.

What changed
Adds `crates/tinystoragedrivers-fence` (local PID lockfile leases, with `acquire`, `acquire_for_read`, stale/dead-PID and same-process leak reclamation, `is_pid_alive`, and retrying remove). Extends `tinystoragedrivers-secrets` with `LEGACY_ENC_PREFIX`/`decrypt_legacy_enc`, `ProtectedHexKeyFile`/`HexKeyFileSource`, `FileImportSource`/`prepare_file_import`/`cleanup_file_import`/`recover_file_import_source` with `PublicationBoundary`/`CleanupAcknowledgment`/`VerifiedFileImport`, `EncryptedFileSecrets::with_key_file_read_only`, Unix `sync_parent_dir`, a quarantine re-probe that returns recovered secrets, and Windows retry of transient sharing errors. Updates specs, README, AGENTS workspace inventory (twelve to thirteen crates), file README, secrets README, and .gitignore for Python caches; the secrets `file` feature also enables `dep:serde`.
Features
Added — Local PID lockfile lease crate: Provides a host-facing local coordination primitive that writes one create-new lock file holding the current PID, reclaims dead or self-owned leaked locks after rechecking length/type/identity, refuses to read or reclaim oversized or non-regular lock paths, and releases on guard drop with bounded retries; it is explicitly not a distributed fencing token. (crates/tinystoragedrivers-fence/src/lib.rs, crates/tinystoragedrivers-fence/Cargo.toml, docs/specs/primitives-v2-inventory/tinystoragedrivers-fence.mdSource symbols below include public definitions, associated methods, public fiel, AGENTS.mdThe workspace contains twelve crates:, docs/specs/primitives-v2.mdStatus: proposed contract for the v2.0.0-alpha.1 implementation.)
Added — Protected read-only hex key source: Lets hosts admit an explicitly registered legacy key file for reading through native identity, link-count and protection checks, with a bounded zeroizing read, absence confirmation, and redacted errors, without granting creation, repair or cleanup authority. (crates/tinystoragedrivers-secrets/src/file/hex_key_source.rs, crates/tinystoragedrivers-secrets/src/file/mod.rsuse crate::crypto::{self, KEY_LEN, key_from_hex, key_to_hex};, crates/tinystoragedrivers-secrets/src/lib.rspub mod testkit;)
Added — Legacy enc: XOR decoder: Adds `LEGACY_ENC_PREFIX` and `decrypt_legacy_enc` so hosts can migrate unauthenticated legacy values to `enc2`, while malformed or non-`enc:` input stays a crypto error without echoing input; the format is explicitly not for new data. (crates/tinystoragedrivers-secrets/src/crypto/mod.rspub const NONCE_LEN: usize = 12;, crates/tinystoragedrivers-secrets/src/crypto/mod.rspub fn is_enc2(value: &str) -> bool {, crates/tinystoragedrivers-secrets/src/crypto/mod_tests.rsfn malformed_values_are_crypto_errors_without_echoing_input() {)
Modified — Quarantine re-probe and Windows transient retry: Before quarantining, the driver now reopens the corrupt path, rechecks identity, re-reads the bytes and returns decrypted secrets if the file has become readable again; it also keeps a single ciphertext copy live and returns errors for a failed move. Windows rename/remove gain bounded retries for transient sharing violations (5/32/33). (crates/tinystoragedrivers-secrets/src/file/mod.rspub fn write_atomic(path: &Path, bytes: &[u8]) -> Result<()> {, crates/tinystoragedrivers-secrets/src/file/windows.rsuse std::fs::{File, OpenOptions};, crates/tinystoragedrivers-secrets/src/file/unix.rspub(super) fn identity(file: &File) -> io::Result<Identity> {, crates/tinystoragedrivers-secrets/src/file/secure.rsuse std::io;)
Added — Release source archive and checksum assets: The release job now checks out the workflow commit and the tag separately with credential persistence disabled, creates the release as a draft, builds a tag-pinned source archive plus a SHA-256 `checksum.toml`, uploads both, and publishes last; the helper rejects non-`vMAJOR.MINOR.PATCH` tags and tags not at the checked-out HEAD. Modified — Docs, README and workspace inventory updates: AGENTS, both READMEs, the file README and the v2 specs/inventory are revised to describe thirteen crates, the local-lease boundary (not distributed fencing), the read-only key source and import ownership, the quarantine re-probe, and the release-tag/checksum process. (docs/specs/primitives-v2-inventory/tinystoragedrivers-secrets.mdSource symbols below include public definitions, associated methods, public fiel, README.mdalways available; production features are opt-in and the default feature set, AGENTS.mdmigrations, tenant policy, or secret-key acquisition., docs/specs/primitives-v2.mdsource-to-destination audit is in [the public item inventory](primitives-v2-inve, crates/tinystoragedrivers-secrets/README.mdThe contract is specified in, crates/tinystoragedrivers-secrets/src/file/README.mdinterval. New staging, key, data and lock files are private before bytes.)
Modified — Workspace dependency and ignore updates: The secrets `file` feature also enables the `serde` dependency, the fence crate pins `sysinfo` with a workspace `libc`, and Python cache artifacts are ignored. (crates/tinystoragedrivers-secrets/Cargo.tomlwinsafe = { version = "0.0.29", default-features = false, features = ["advapi",, crates/tinystoragedrivers-fence/Cargo.toml)
Tests
unit — Hex key source tests assert missing-leaf absence without mutation, exact size bound acceptance versus bound-plus-one rejection, malformed input redaction by error kind, missing-parent errors without creation, non-regular and hard-linked source rejection, growth after metadata, retained source byte changes, same-byte named substitution preserving both objects, mode and symlink rejection, replacement namespace failure, interrupted/canceled reads, and Windows owner-only inherited-DACL, foreign ACL, junction and UNC cases.: Assertion-heavy sibling test file exists covering the behavioral boundaries; no trusted execution evidence is supplied, and the tests lane stated these assert observable outcomes without reporting results. (crates/tinystoragedrivers-secrets/src/file/hex_key_source_tests.rs)
unit — Fence tests cover dead-PID stale-lock reclamation, same-process leaked-owner reclamation under the process mutex, transient remove retries, read-only fallback only for readers, in-process contention timeouts, poisoned-mutex recovery, partial-lock cleanup on write failure, oversized lock files, FIFO lock paths, and conservative PID liveness.: Assertion-heavy sibling test file exists with fault-injection hooks; no execution evidence is available for this review and none is claimed. (crates/tinystoragedrivers-fence/src/lib_tests.rs)
integration — Migration tests cover exact-import retry reconciliation versus conflicting operation/value, refused unbound existing values, wrong-key receipts, changed destination never authorizing cleanup, source replacement preserving both objects, unsupported versus supported cleanup boundaries, restart recovery of the authenticated backup, hard-linked ledger rejection, cooperating-writer coordination refusals, and reserved-object aliasing.: Assertion-heavy test file exists alongside the new module; no execution evidence is available and none is claimed. (crates/tinystoragedrivers-secrets/src/file/migration_tests.rs)
unit — Quarantine tests in the file-mode module file cover move-failure preservation, archive identity recheck after move, archive restoration when the source name stays absent, unsafe archive candidates, quarantine name collisions, and a file that becomes readable again not being quarantined.: Sibling tests exercise the changed quarantine paths; no trusted execution results were provided. Conclusion: Success
Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
Positive: The tests lane answered that the release job's permissions are unchanged, the new checkout pins `ref` and disables credential persistence, the archive step passes the tag through `env` rather than shell interpolation, and the fence/crypto/hex-key/migration modules ship assertion-heavy sibling tests.
Lane summary: This revision adds a local PID-lockfile fence crate with heavily fault-injected tests, protected legacy key-file admission, an encrypted import/cleanup ledger, a quarantine re-probe that returns recovered secrets instead of quarantining, Windows AV-transient retries, and release-asset tooling with its own test suite; the error paths, redaction, and boundary conditions all have tests that would fail if the behaviour regressed. Two defects stand out: the fence lease's read path can claim ownership over a lock file it never owned, and the quarantine re-probe unconditionally returns any successfully decrypted and parsed file at the corrupt path, which silently adopts a mutated or foreign file now occupying that name.

description
Conclusion: Success
Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
Lane summary: Adds a new `tinystoragedrivers-fence` crate (local PID lockfile leases), legacy `enc:` decryption, protected hex-key-file admission, verified file-import/cleanup primitives, a quarantine re-read that recovers a file that became readable, Windows AV retry, and release-asset tooling (source archive + checksum manifest) wired into `release.yml`/`ci.yml`. The added workflow steps use permissions already granted (`contents: write`), pin both checkouts to in-repo refs with `persist-credentials: false`, and interpolate only workflow-controlled values (`github.token`, `needs.prepare.outputs.tag`, `github.repository`) into shell steps, so I found no workflow-permission, unpinned-action or shell-interpolation defect; the new Python helpers validate the tag shape and that the tag points at HEAD. I did not run the test suite, so behaviour of the new fence/migration code is unverified by me; nothing in the diff shows a compile break or a broken test it touches.

Bound the import ledger size or prune completed backups.
Each import stores a hex backup of its source, up to about 2 MiB. Completed intents keep their backups, and no code removes them. read_ledger and write_ledger handle the whole .imports file on every prepare, recovery, and cleanup. Cost therefore grows with each import.

Brings in tinybus v0.3.6 and the zstd 0.14.3 advisory bump released as
v2.1.2. The only conflict was the workspace tinybus pin: both sides were
already at 2.1.2 for tinystoragedrivers-bus, and upstream's tinybus rev
6ce06bc (v0.3.6) is a strict descendant of the epic's 0de2d28, so the
newer pin is kept, matching the lockfiles and proof workspaces.

Reclaim lock files left empty by an owner that died before writing its pid, and refuse to reclaim oversized or non-regular lock paths so a FIFO cannot block acquisition. Also treat a surviving /proc entry as proof of life when sysinfo cannot read the process, and clean up the lock file when syncing it fails.

The import source is now read into a pre-allocated zeroizing buffer so earlier plaintext copies are never freed unzeroized, and the cleanup quarantine name is derived from the import intent name rather than the operation. When verification fails, the reservation is only unlinked if the name still resolves to the object this call created, leaving a replaced name for its owner.

The cleanup quarantine directory was derived from the receipt name, so two imports sharing an operation but with different names could collide and one stalled cleanup would block the other. Derive it from the operation instead and add a test covering concurrent imports that share an operation.

The quarantine directory name was hashed from the operation bytes, which
could collide across receipts for the same operation. Hashing the receipt
name instead keeps each cleanup target distinct.

The quarantine directory used during import cleanup was derived from the
receipt's name, so imports sharing an operation could collide on the same
quarantine path. It is now derived from the operation, and the test was
adjusted to print the cleanup result for diagnosis.

Intents are stored and looked up by name, so multiple imports can share an
operation. Deriving the quarantine path from the operation let one import's
stalled cleanup block another's, so the quarantine is now keyed by the import
name and the test was rewritten to cover that case directly.

Releases are now created as drafts and only published once the source archive and checksum manifest have been uploaded, so a failed asset step can no longer leave a published release without its files. The asset helper is checked out from the workflow's own commit rather than the release tag, since a `current` dispatch may select an older tag that predates it, and draft detection uses `gh release list` because `gh release view` may not see drafts.

The `src/lib.rs` row no longer lists the `FileTransaction*` types among the

Bound the lock-file read to MAXLOCKBYTES.

Bound the lock-file read to MAX_LOCK_BYTES.

When an unreaped owner remains a zombie, system.process(target).is_some() and /proc/{pid} both report it as alive. Stale-lock recovery then does not remove the lock, and acquisition can time out.

The lock file is now opened non-blocking on unix and the handle is checked to be a regular file before reading, so a FIFO placed at the lock path cannot stall lease checks. Import cleanup quarantines are now scoped by name and source identity so imports sharing a source directory no longer collide.
