Opening a database now retries in a loop, releasing the global registry lock before retiring a stale connection so a caller-supplied operation can itself open a database without deadlocking. Competing openers recheck the registry after retirement, so only one of them creates the replacement connection. Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The requested identity is now computed on each loop iteration and, when it could not be read up front, the file identity is re-read before reusing a cached connection. This avoids returning a connection whose underlying file was replaced between the initial stat and the registry lookup. Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The identity filter now uses is_none_or instead of map_or, which is the idiomatic form for this check and avoids the clippy lint against map_or with a constant default. Behaviour is unchanged. Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Reformatted a conditional in the connection cache lookup and an assertion in the concurrent reopen test so they match the project's rustfmt output. No behaviour change. Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The retry loop in Db::open only iterates on Unix, where file identities are compared, so Clippy flags it as never_loop on other platforms. Annotate the loop with a conditional allow to keep non-Unix builds warning-free. Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

Record the identity of the file actually opened
When the database is initially absent, requested_identity is None, so this filter accepts any identity observed after Connection::open. If another process installs a replacement between SQLite creating file A and this metadata read—which occurs only after several pragmas—the connection still targets A while Db::identity is recorded from replacement B. Subsequent opens then see B's matching identity and continue returning the stale connection, silently directing reads and writes to the unlinked database. Capture and validate the identity associated with the file opened by SQLite rather than accepting an arbitrary post-open identity.

Avoid recursively retiring the active connection
On Unix, if a run/run_now callback calls SqliteConnection::open for the same path after its main file has been replaced, the callback already owns self.conn, and this call reaches retire(), which tries to acquire that same non-reentrant mutex and hangs permanently. The new drop(open) fixes the previously reported registry-lock inversion but does not prevent this same-thread deadlock; retirement needs to avoid waiting recursively on the connection currently executing the opener.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Retire a cached connection only when the file is missing or has a different identity.
When file_identity returns None for both the initial lookup and the recheck, the reuse test fails. The retirement block then retires a live connection, even though the file may still exist. A transient EACCES on a parent directory can cause this. Retirement sets conn to None, so existing Arc<Db> handles fail on later calls, even after access returns. An unidentifiable path should fail the new open. It should not retire the connection or reuse it.

Summary
The SQLite connection registry can retain a live
Dbafter its database file is removed. If a new database is created at the same path, the path-keyed registry reused the stale connection and exposed data from the removed file.Record the Unix device and inode for each opened database and only reuse a cached connection when the current file identity matches. Add a regression test that deletes and recreates the database directory and verifies the replacement starts without the old schema.
