Summary

The external_ipv6 service option starts a hostNetwork socat DaemonSet (v6proxy-<node>) to forward the IPv6 NodePort to the IPv4 one. Its image was docker.io/alpine/socat:1.8.0.0. Clusters without Docker Hub egress can't pull it, so the pod stays in ImagePullBackOff and nothing listens on the IPv6 NodePort.

This change:

  • Points DefaultV6ProxyImage at us-west1-docker.pkg.dev/kne-external/kne/alpine/socat:1.8.1.3. This is an unmodified mirror of alpine/socat:1.8.1.3 (same index digest, sha256:466c8a03…) in the public KNE Artifact Registry, next to init-wait and bridge. Anyone can read it.
  • Adds the image to the containerd (k8s.io) pre-pull list in cloudbuild/internal.pkr.hcl, so the proxy starts on internal VM images without pulling anything over the network.

The v6proxy security context and resource limits are unchanged: the container still runs as UID/GID 65532 with no capabilities.

Testing

  • go test -race ./topo/node/ ./topo/ passes.
  • golangci-lint run --new-from-rev=origin/main ./topo/node/... reports 0 issues. codespell and gofmt are clean.
  • Confirmed the mirrored tag exists in kne-external/kne.

…stry

The external_ipv6 service option starts a socat DaemonSet that used
docker.io/alpine/socat:1.8.0.0. Clusters without Docker Hub egress can't
pull that image, so the proxy never starts and nothing listens on the
IPv6 NodePort.

Use a mirror of alpine/socat:1.8.1.3 in the public KNE Artifact Registry
(us-west1-docker.pkg.dev/kne-external/kne), alongside init-wait and
bridge, and pre-pull it into the internal GCE VM image so the proxy
starts without any network pull.
