Breaking change. Companion to #386 (Playwright text matching): with substring matching, ambiguous locators become more likely, and until now they silently resolved to the first match.

Problem

screen.getByRole('button').tap() with several buttons on screen tapped the first one; expect(screen.getByText('Delete')).toBeVisible() with two "Delete" rows checked only the first. Playwright raises a strict mode violation in both cases, which is what makes a wrong locator show up as a failure instead of a test that passes for the wrong reason. Error messages also never said which locator failed (finding 37).

Fix

  • Every action and single-element query/assertion (tap, fill, getText, isVisible, exists, waitFor, boundingBox, screenshot, scrollIntoViewIfNeeded, all expect(locator) matchers except toHaveCount) resolves through one strict path. More than one match throws a StrictModeViolationError (subclass of LocatorError) immediately, no retry, naming the locator and listing the elements:

strict mode violation: getByRole('button') resolved to 2 elements:
      1) Button "Submit" [submitBtn]
      2) Button "Cancel" [cancelBtn]
Narrow the locator, or use .first(), .last(), .nth(i) or .filter().

  • count(), all(), first(), last(), nth(), toHaveCount() are not strict. isVisible() rethrows the violation instead of answering false.

  • Native trees report one control at several levels (an iOS Button and its StaticText child both carry the label, Android rows and their TextViews likewise). Matches that form one ancestor chain collapse to the outermost node and count as a single element, so getByText('Basic UI').tap() keeps working; two separate rows with the same text are still a violation.

  • New describeStrategy() (exported) renders a strategy as test code (getByRole('button', { name: 'Save' }).first()); timeout errors now include it: Locator: no matching element found after 5000ms (getByTestId('zzz')).

  • README and docs/src/guides/locators.md gain a "Strict mode" section.

Migration

Locators that matched several elements and relied on "first wins" need .first(), .nth(i) or a narrower locator. The error message says which locator and lists the candidates.

Tests

  • New unit tests: violation on two sibling matches with no tap sent, raised at once (< 1 s with a 5 s timeout), message lists the matches, getText/isVisible/exists/waitFor are strict, count/all/first/last/nth are not, a container + its text child collapse to one element (outermost centre tapped), two rows with the same text are still a violation (five failed before the change)
  • npm test — 832 passed, 1 skipped; npm run lint
  • Pixel 9 Pro emulator and iPhone 17 Pro simulator (Playground): getByRole('button').tap() and expect(...).toBeVisible() fail at once listing 5/6 buttons, .first() works, getByText('Basic UI').tap() and getByLabel('Toggle switch').tap() still resolve the container, getByRole('radio').tap() fails and .nth(1).tap() works, timeout errors name the locator
  • Full e2e suites on both devices unchanged (only the pre-existing refactor: use createRequire for mobilecli binary resolution #8 failure, fixed in fix(core): MobileWebViewPage declares the Page api name so expect(page) from @playwright/test works #385)

Walkthrough

Locator operations now fail immediately when strict resolution finds multiple distinct matches. Ancestor-chain matches collapse to the outermost node. Collection and positional methods remain non-strict. The change adds strategy and node descriptions for violation messages, exports strict-mode utilities, tests the matching behavior, and documents it.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 10373

Strict mode can wrongly fail actions on a single element when that element sits inside nested matching containers. Counts and toHaveCount assertions can also disagree with the documented rule that a container and its matching text child count as one element. Fix both before merging this breaking change. A smaller issue is that error messages drop an explicit exact:false option.

Apply ancestor-chain normalization to collection and positional selection.

The documentation states that an ancestor and its matching text child count as one element. count() and all() use raw queryAll results, and toHaveCount() delegates to count(). Positional methods also index raw parent results. These methods can therefore report or select both nodes instead of the collapsed outermost node.

This preserves non-strict collection behavior while making collection counts and positional selection use the documented ancestor-chain rule.

Include exact: false in locator descriptions.

If a caller uses getByText('Save', { exact: false }), a strict-mode or timeout error displays getByText('Save'). That describes a different query and hides why extra elements matched. Render both explicitly supplied values of exact.

Deduplicate the same node before checking ancestry.

If nested Cell nodes both contain one Button, getByType('Cell').getByRole('button') returns that same button once per parent. flattenNodes(outer.children) does not contain outer, so this helper retains both references and a single button causes a strict-mode violation. Treat identical references as one match.
