fix(processtree): re-read the parent from procfs for unknown host parents - #1063
This fixes a race that leaves kubectl exec'd processes with a depth-1 process tree in alerts. The race is the cause of the intermittent Test_24_ProcessTreeDepthTest failures. On the Kubernetes exec path, when the parent is an unknown host process, the fix re-reads the process's current parent from /proc/<pid>/stat.
Overview
The race. When a process is started through runc exec, its exec event records whichever parent it had at that moment. If runc exec has already exited, the parent is the containerd-shim. If runc is still running, the parent is runc. runc runs on the host, so the process tree only holds a parentless placeholder for it, and GetPidBranch cannot reach the shim. The alert then falls back to a single node with pcomm: runc and a zero start time. Today the tree is only repaired when the same pid execs again (UpdatePPID).
How often this happens, from the component-test logs:
About 30% of process-tree roots have runc as their parent.
The fix. On the Kubernetes exec path, if the parent chain reaches neither pid 1 nor the container's shim, the current parent is re-read from /proc/<pid>/stat. By then runc has usually exited and the kernel has reparented the process to the shim. The new parent is adopted through UpdatePPID, and only if it is already a node in the tree.
Which node is repaired: the re-read targets the topmost node below the unknown ancestor. So a child that execs before its parent was repaired also fixes the parent.
Pid-reuse guard: the re-read is skipped when:
the node has a pending exit;
the start time in /proc doesn't match the recorded start time;
the node is an ancestor with no recorded start time;
the new parent is recorded as younger than the child.
Cost: the /proc read happens only on this unknown-parent path, under the existing tree lock. That is the same trade-off ensureStartTime already makes. Execs with a known chain never read /proc.
How to Test
go test -race -count=1 ./pkg/processtree/... passes, including 8 new tests:
runc parent → re-read to the shim, so the tree has its full depth;
the pid vanished;
the ppid is unchanged;
non-Kubernetes mode;
a child execs first;
both pid-reuse rejections;
no read when the parent is already known;
the real procfs reader.
With the hook commented out, the tests that depend on it fail.
go build ./... and go vet ./... are clean.
Test_24_ProcessTreeDepthTest in the component tests.
Caveats
If runc is still running when the event is handled, nothing changes. A later exec in that subtree, or the periodic procfs scan, still repairs it.
Improved process ancestry tracking for Kubernetes exec events by rereading and correcting an unknown parent when reliable process information is available.
Avoids changing ancestry when the parent cannot be verified or the process identity indicates the relationship may be stale.
Documentation
Added guidance on parent attribution, correction limits, and situations where ancestry remains unchanged.
…t is an unknown host process
A `runc exec`'d process is reported with whichever parent it had when its
exec event was captured: the containerd-shim if runc has already exited,
or runc itself if it is still alive. runc is a host process, so the tree
only holds a parentless placeholder for it and GetPidBranch cannot reach
the shim. Alerts then fall back to a depth-1 tree with pcomm "runc",
which made Test_24_ProcessTreeDepthTest flaky.
On the exec path, when the parent chain reaches neither pid 1 nor the
container's shim, re-read the current parent from /proc/<pid>/stat and
adopt it through UpdatePPID if it is already a tree node. The read
targets the topmost node below the unknown ancestor, so a child exec
repairs its parent too. It is guarded against pid reuse with the
recorded procfs start time and a pending-exit check.

Walkthrough
The process-tree creator now rereads a process’s parent from procfs for selected Kubernetes exec events. It updates the process tree only when ancestry, PID identity, and start-time checks pass. Added tests cover successful repairs and cases where the tree remains unchanged.

Issue 1058: This change checks process start times before adopting a reread parent, but it does not implement the broader process-tree cache changes described in the issue.
The repair improves exec ancestry, but narrow failure cases can still produce incorrect parent information or disable rereading until restart. These bounded issues warrant owner awareness and correction or explicit follow-up; no broad operational failure is established.

A delayed exec event can adopt a replacement process’s parent after PID reuse, attaching the original command to unrelated ancestry because the exec target’s identity is not verified.

Address review findings on #1063:
- 4422755922: the procfs parent reader retries opening /proc on each
call until it succeeds instead of caching a first failure.
- 4422755936, 4422790111: a first-seen exec target must prove its
identity. Its /proc start time must not be later than the event's exec
timestamp mapped back to the boot clock; otherwise, or when the
timestamp is unknown, the event's parent is kept.
- 4422755943: the new parent node must have no pending exit, and its
/proc start time must match the recorded one when known and must not be
later than the child's.
- 4422755956: the repaired node's Pcomm is set to the adopted parent's
Comm, and the event's stale Pcomm is not applied after adoption.

🔵 Needs a closer look
Successive queued execs can overwrite a repaired parent name or bypass PID-reuse checks, producing inconsistent parent details or adopting unrelated ancestry.
No open issues 🎉

In code that hasn't changed since last review
Recheck recycled exec target start time for delayed execs
With two queued execs handled after PID reuse, the first rejects the replacement's parent, but ensureStartTime at line 609 still caches the replacement's creation time. The second delayed exec then passes known == startNs and adopts unrelated ancestry because this branch bypasses the exec-timestamp guard. Check createdBeforeExec for the exec target even when a cached start time exists, and extend TestExecRereadRejectsRecycledExecTarget to cover successive delayed execs.
Prevent stale Pcomm from overwriting repaired PPID
When two queued execs for the same PID both report runc, the first can repair PPID and Pcomm to the shim, but the second preserves that PPID while overwriting Pcomm with runc because rereadUnknownParent skips the now-known chain. Alerts then report a parent name inconsistent with the parent PID. Only apply the event's Pcomm when its PPID matches the retained PPID, and add a regression test with two such execs.
…layed execs
Address Copilot review 5711226822 on #1063:
- The exec target's /proc start time is checked against the event's exec
timestamp even when a start time is already recorded. An earlier
delayed exec can record a recycled pid's replacement through
ensureStartTime, which made the second exec pass the recorded-time
match and adopt unrelated ancestry.
- An exec event's Pcomm is applied only when its PPID is the parent the
node keeps, so a queued exec that still reports runc no longer
relabels a node whose parent was repaired to the shim.

🔵 Needs a closer look
Cached start times can let delayed child exec events attach an old subtree to a replacement’s parent, while inconsistent clock offsets can misclassify process lifetimes.
No open issues 🎉
2 previously missed issues
In code that hasn't changed since last review
Validate ancestor start time against child exec timestamp
A delayed parent exec can reject a replacement created at 7s, yet ensureStartTime then caches that replacement's start time. A queued child exec stamped 6s trusts the matching cached value here and attaches the old ancestor and its child to the replacement's parent. Check the ancestor's start time against the child event's exec timestamp too, and add a delayed parent-then-child regression test.
Reuse Gadget boot-to-wall clock offset for exec timestamps
Exec timestamps use gadgets.WallTimeFromBootTime, whose fixed offset is sampled during package initialization, rather than this independently sampled offset. A startup clock adjustment or scheduling delay between clock reads can therefore make createdBeforeExec reject a legitimate process or accept a replacement created after the event. Reuse Gadget's offset with int64(gadgets.WallTimeFromBootTime(1)) - 1 instead of resampling it, and update the offset documentation accordingly.
…se IG's clock offset
Address Copilot review 5711296045 on #1063:
- An ancestor re-read target's /proc start time must also not be later
than the child event's exec timestamp. A delayed parent exec can cache
a recycled pid's replacement start time through ensureStartTime, which
let a queued child exec stamped before the replacement existed attach
the old ancestry to the replacement's parent.
- The boot-to-wall offset is read back from gadgets.WallTimeFromBootTime,
which produces exec timestamps in this node-agent version, instead of
being resampled at construction.

Validate ancestor start time against child exec timestamp (processtree_creator.go:303): every re-read target, ancestors included, must now have a /proc start time no later than the event's exec timestamp. A replacement's start time cached by a delayed parent exec can no longer be trusted by a child exec with an earlier timestamp. Covered by TestExecRereadRejectsAncestorCreatedAfterChildExec.
Reuse Gadget boot-to-wall clock offset (processtree_creator.go:100): the offset is now int64(gadgets.WallTimeFromBootTime(1)) - 1, the exact offset IG sampled at init, instead of a separately sampled one.
… tests isolate their guard
Address Copilot review comment 4422945671 on #1063:
TestExecRereadRejectsRecycledAncestor fed the child exec with a zero
StartTimeNs, so createdBeforeExec rejected the repair on its own and
both subcases passed even with the ancestor-identity guards removed.
The child now execs after the ancestor's /proc start time, so each
subcase fails when only its guard is removed.
