About

I'm Kath, a researcher working on real-time epidemiological analysis during outbreaks of infectious disease. I work in the epiforecasts group, based in the Centre for Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Disease in London.

My core interest is in rapid evidence synthesis for public health decision-making. I focus on using quantitative modelling to understand infectious disease dynamics, with particular experience in real-time forecasting. My work includes

  • methods for model evaluation, comparison, and combination (ensemble modelling)
  • combining scientific judgements through expert elicitation and consensus forming
  • evaluating the strengths, weaknesses, and trade-offs in scientific advisory groups that operate within the resource constraints of emergency response.

I previously worked at the Wellcome Trust before training in epidemiology. I then worked on the COVID-19 response, contributing to the UK’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies and building modelling infrastructure for the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.

I currently lead a theme of work around outbreak response at LSHTM. I teach across modules in epidemiology and data science, and advocate for an inclusive working environment at my institution, focussing on disability. I am a happy Londoner, a feminist, and a community gardener.
