Node.js LTS (v24) version outdated #2834

Description

@wederchr

I tried installing the latest version nodejs LTS (24) and ended up with 24.12.0 instead of the latest version which is (24.16). It seems only v25 is being updated currently. Also v26 is missing. Is there a way to update this package to add the missing versions for Node.js 24 and 26?

For reference: https://nodejs.org/en/about/previous-releases

    AFAIU :

Is there a way to update this package to add the missing versions for Node.js 24 [...] ?

nodejs 24.16.0 has already been merged upstream to nixpkgs's staging branch NixOS/nixpkgs#522655

Now, it has to be backported to others branches, which implies that the nixpkgs's pipeline have to rebuild every packages that depend on nodejs, according to the PR flag, it is 5001 (or more) packages, it's big !

You can see part of the branching system in this doc
    https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/blob/87fcb8ea8bba4b3211a4f9f341d7259c13506a2a/CONTRIBUTING.md#staging

You can follow the advancement on this page

I tried installing the latest version nodejs LTS (24) and ended up with 24.12.0 instead of the latest version which is (24.16)

As time of writing, the unstable includes nodejs 24.15.0
    https://search.nixos.org/packages?channel=unstable&query=nodejs

But as you said, nixhub, only includes 24.12.0

It seems that nixhub lag behind nixpkgs (again) #2609

Also v26 is missing. Is there a way to update this package to add the missing versions for Node.js [...] 26?

nodejs 26.2.0 is available on the unstable channel with the name nodejs_26
    https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/blob/64c08a7ca051951c8eae34e3e3cb1e202fe36786/pkgs/development/web/nodejs/v26.nix

You can't fix it yourself because nixhub is (sadly) currently closed source #2827

Solutions to get specific nodejs's version :

    • easiest : wait, it will eventually get updated
    • if you need nodejs 24.15.0 you can install using flake https://www.jetify.com/docs/devbox/guides/using-flakes
      devbox add github:NixOS/nixpkgs#nodejs_24
    • if you need nodejs 26.2.0
      devbox add github:NixOS/nixpkgs#nodejs_26
    • if you need nodejs 24.16.0 ⚠️ Devbox will ask Nix to get this version, the built artifact (binaries, libraries...) seems not available yet, so it will download and rebuild nodejs and every dependency, which is resources heavy (CPU to build every package, storage to download every build dependencies...)
      devbox add github:NixOS/nixpkgs/fb1fdb4992324c929e628458e2ac2ad1aae6b1c8#nodejs_24
      # ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
      # the hash of the merge commit of the previous mentionned pull request

Thank you @pinage404 for the detailed explanation and apologies for the late response. I was on vacation/ afk until today.

Using flakes is definitely a good temporary solution, thank you for the hint!

Long term I would prefer nixhub to be up to date though. You mentioned that it seems to be lagging behind at the moment. Looking at the current state of the nodejs package on nixhub it seems to me that only the latest major version gets synced. I.e. now that v26 is available all other major version are no longer getting synced (e.g. v25, v24, v22). Is my assumption correct and if yes how can this problem be addressed?

Triage: p1, no difficulty label. This is a Nixhub/search-index problem, and the indexer is not in this repo, so I can't judge how hard the fix is.

Reproduced against the search API today:

    curl -s 'https://search.devbox.sh/v2/pkg?name=nodejs_24' | jq '.releases[0] | .version, .last_updated'
    "24.12.0" "2025-12-29T16:45:58Z"
    curl -s 'https://search.devbox.sh/v2/pkg?name=nodejs_22' | jq '.releases[0] | .version, .last_updated'
    "22.23.2" "2026-08-27T07:16:00Z"
    curl -s 'https://search.devbox.sh/v2/pkg?name=nodejs_26' | jq '.releases[0] | .version, .last_updated'
    "26.8.1" "2026-08-27T23:47:58Z"
    curl -s 'https://search.devbox.sh/v2/resolve?name=nodejs&version=24' | jq .version # "24.12.0"

nixos-unstable has nodejs_24 at 24.20.0 (pkgs/development/web/nodejs/v24.nix). Node 26 is now indexed. nodejs_24 in particular has not been re-indexed since 2025-12-29, while nodejs_22 and nodejs_26 are current. So this is not only "the latest major gets synced". Something specific to nodejs_24 stopped the indexer, possibly nodejs becoming an alias of nodejs_24 around then. nodejs@24 is the current LTS, so this affects a lot of users, hence p1.

Suggested direction: check why the indexer skips nodejs_24 (dedup by derivation or alias handling?) and backfill it. Until then, devbox add github:NixOS/nixpkgs#nodejs_24 works as a workaround, as noted above.
