I also took the opportunity to slightly improve the UI and fix a few bugs (e.g. cache package items remained clickable during an ongoing scan, and a scan error would leave the UI stuck in the scanning state indefinitely).
Note: the cachePackages section doesn't work great but requires changes to the cache layer, so I left it for later (#634)
