MIDI desks anywhere: the APC40 profile, USB MIDI on a board, OSC followers - #132
Conversation
An Akai APC40 mkII plugged into the browser now drives a board: faders and knobs move the Control slots, the track buttons toggle switches, and the 40 clip pads show and apply the presets, lit dim white when stored and green when applied. The multi-board guide is restructured around the StadBeest video and gains a section on playing it by hand with the APC40. KPI: 256lights | Desktop:2158KB | tick:1/6/8/2/7/9/340/8/9/15us(FPS:1000000/166666/125000/500000/142857/111111/2941/125000/111111/66666) | ESP32:2065KB | src:299(75949) | test:226(51065) | functions-over:334 Commit: src +198/-63 lines | test +104/-3 lines | duplicated lines 3791 -> 3791 (+0) **Core** - The MIDI service gains a `profile` select, Mackie Control or Akai APC40 mkII. The APC40 profile maps faders to CC7, track knobs to CC 0x30 to 0x37 and track buttons to note 0x32, and its hidden `hello` carries the SysEx that switches the desk to host-lit mode plus the knob ring style. - The Control module exposes pad states (empty, stored, active) and `pressPad(slot)`, and mirrors the preset grid to a surface only after a preset is stored, moved, renamed, removed or applied. - `ControlSurface.h` drops the unused ring and color verbs; its notes explain why a surface receives values rather than colors. **UI** - The browser MIDI bridge asks for SysEx access and sends the service's `hello` before the desk slots, again after a reconnect. **Tests** - Four APC40 unit tests: faders, knobs and track buttons; the greeting; the top-left pad storing and applying preset 1; the button lights and knob rings following their slots. A JS test pins the hello parsing. **Docs/CI** - The control-surface reference gains the APC40 mkII section, and the desks get transparent photos; the MIDI service card names the profile. - The multi-board guide opens with the StadBeest video, follows the build order and adds playing it by hand with the APC40. - The S31 CoreBoard and P4-ETH pages gain a board image; the MIDI desks plan gains step 2b. - Scenario observations, repo-health, code, prose and docgen metrics. **Reviews** - 👾 pad states recomputed every 20 ms → done, mirrored only after a preset change. - 👾 ring and color verbs unused → done, removed. - 👾 the pad grid assumes the Control card's width → done, `static_assert`. - 👾 a test checked part of a pad message → done, the full `902002`. - 👾 an empty pad reported as acted on → done, "pad N is empty". - 👾 the reference claimed release velocity 0 → done, "note off" only. - 👾 stale `desk_` comment → done. - 👾 hard-wrapped Sources lines → done. - 👾 a test declared its controls twice → done. Preserve ordinary MIDI when SysEx access is denied.
This request requires SysEx permission even for Mackie Control. If the browser denies SysEx but would allow ordinary MIDI, the promise rejects. midiAsked then prevents another request, so Mackie input and feedback remain unavailable until reload. Request SysEx only for the APC40, or retry without SysEx and report that APC40 setup remains unavailable. The Web MIDI specification defines rejection when requested SysEx support is denied. (w3.org)

A MIDI desk now plugs straight into an S3 board's USB port, with no computer, and a board can follow another over OSC: it takes that board's values and presets, and sends back only what changes on its own desk. Together they make a MIDI-OSC bridge, a small board that turns any class-compliant USB MIDI desk into a network controller; the StadBeest runs one with an iCON QCon. Add active-capability predicates for MIDI and OSC.
The device picker marks supported capabilities as active only when CAP_MODULE contains a matching predicate. The new model configures MidiService and OscModule, but MIDI and OSC have no predicates, so both appear as merely supported.

Remove the platform dependency from MidiService.
src/core/services/MidiService.h directly includes platform/platform.h and calls platform::hasUsbMidiHost and the platform::usbMidi* transport functions. This violates the mandatory src/core/** boundary. src/core/util/UsbMidi.h provides packet encoding and decoding only; it is not a transport abstraction.
Define a small core-owned USB-MIDI transport interface, inject it into MidiService, and implement the adapter in src/platform. Preserve the no-host behavior and the existing factory construction path.

Remove the direct platform dependency from MidiService and replace its
platform::hasUsbMidiHost and platform::usbMidi* calls with an injected
core-owned USB-MIDI transport interface. Implement the transport adapter under
src/platform, and update the existing factory construction path to provide it
while preserving behavior when no USB-MIDI host is available.

Check the result of the pad-press send.
pressPad returns true after it calls sendPress. sendFeedback returns false when no host is set and no peer has written yet. In that case the press is dropped and the caller still reports success. For example, MIDI then shows "pad N" as applied. One fix is to make sendPress return a bool and propagate it to pressPad.

Update OscModule::sendPress to return whether the pad-press packet was sent,

Clean up failed USB client startup
When client registration succeeds but a transfer allocation fails, runClient() deletes itself without freeing the successful allocation or deregistering s.client. runLibrary() then keeps waiting for the no-client event, so the host is not uninstalled. usbMidiBegin() still reports success because s.libTask remains set, and MidiService does not retry the missing client. Clean up the partial startup before deleting the client task.

Retry USB MIDI startup after asynchronous host-install failure.
usbMidiBegin() reports only task creation. runLibrary() can then fail in usb_host_install() and clear s.libTask. MidiService keeps usbBegun_ true, so serveUsb() does not retry while USB remains enabled. Call usbMidiBegin() on every USB service tick; it remains idempotent while the library task exists.

Use the first MidiService for SysEx permission.
The bridge already uses services[0] for the greeting and desk state. midiWantsSysex() scans all services instead. With Mackie first and APC40 later, the bridge can request SysEx permission but send only the empty Mackie greeting. Use the same first-service selector for permission and output. This preserves the existing first-service precedence.

Reset the test clock if an assertion fails.
setTestNowMs changes process-wide state, and the platform contract requires tests to restore 0. If the REQUIRE fails, the normal-path reset does not run. Use an RAII guard to restore the clock during stack unwinding.

A MIDI desk now drives MoonLight three ways: through the browser, including the new Akai APC40 mkII profile; plugged straight into an S3 board's USB port, with no computer; and from one board to another over OSC, since a board can now follow another.
