feat(middleware): release v4.7.0 with configurable access log levels - #142
Conversation
O histograma db.client.operation.duration nao tinha bucket boundaries
definidos. otelsql o emite em SEGUNDOS (semconv `unit: "s"`) mas nao
expoe opcao de buckets — so WithMeterProvider. Sem uma View, o SDK
aplica o default
{5, 10, 25, 50, 75, 100, 250, 500, 750, 1000, 2500, 5000, 7500, 10000},
que foi desenhado para MILISSEGUNDOS. Em segundos, o menor balde vira
5s e toda query cai no primeiro bucket.
MEDIDO EM PRODUCAO 2026-09-29 (aws-production, 7 dias):
latencia media real | p95 reportado
ledger 1,96 ms | 4.75
billing-worker 1,06 ms | 4.75
plugin-br-bank-tr 0,65 ms | 4.75
streaming-hub 0,14 ms | 4.75
Os 4 servicos retornam EXATAMENTE 4.75 — nao e latencia, e a
interpolacao dentro do primeiro balde.
cria diretamente (httpServerDurationBuckets, rpcDurationBuckets,
messagingDurationBuckets): {0.005 ... 10}. So o sqlobs tinha ficado de
fora — e omissao, nao decisao.
TESTE: TestSecondsHistogramViewFixesDBClientBuckets falha sem a View
(`smallest boundary = 0, want 0.005` e `boundary 25 exceeds 10 s`) e
passa com ela. Verificado nos dois sentidos.

fix(tracing): buckets em segundos para db.client.operation.duration
The 4xx and 5xx per-tenant counters now carry http.response.status_code alongside tenant and route. The request counter and the latency histogram are unchanged. Without the code, "this tenant saw 931 client errors" is where the investigation starts rather than ends: a 409 retry storm and a malformed payload are different incidents, and on-call had to leave the alert and query the OTel metric (which has the code but no tenant) to tell them apart. The original budget assumed the cartesian product, 50 tenants x 30 routes x 6 codes = 9000 sets against the SDK's 2000 default. That product is not what gets recorded: a set only exists once a tenant actually fails on a route with a code, and error traffic is sparse. Measured across the SaaS fleet on 2026-09-30, responses_4xx.by_tenant held 9 sets from 3 tenants (6 routes, 2 routes, 1 route) against 86 sets on the request counter. For the ledger, the 44 route+code pairs actually observed bound the worst case at 264 sets across its 6 tenants; doubling the tenant count twice still lands under half the default limit. Tenants are customers here, so that count grows in years. The code deliberately stays off the request counter, which is the highest-volume instrument and almost entirely 200s, and off the latency histogram, where each label multiplies by bucket_count+2 and only the bounded status class belongs. docs/metrics-contract.md carries the recalculated budget and the caveat for adopters whose error traffic is spread across their whole surface. …code feat(middleware): add status code to per-tenant error counters
A client got 192 identical 422s from the consignado gateway in staging and the logs held only status and route: Huma and several middlewares write the refusal body themselves and return nil, so the access line never saw why. On status >= 400 the access line now reads the buffered response body (at most 8 KiB, never a stream) and appends problem_code, problem_title, problem_detail (only without a code), problem_errors and problem_errors_dropped from a JSON body, or problem_text from any other body. The decode struct has no value field, so echoed input is never decoded. Levels and the one-line-per-request shape are unchanged. X-Lerian-Ref: 0x1
Security review of the problem-reason fields found three ways the line could
log the wrong thing: a compress middleware mounted after WithHTTPLogging made
a text 400 log gzip bytes as problem_text; a rendered returned error logged
its text twice (error and problem_text); and a JSON body mislabelled as text
reached problem_text whole, bypassing the struct that has no value field.
The reason fields are now skipped on any Content-Encoding, problem_text is
omitted when the line already has an error field, and a body starting with
"{" is decoded through the struct whatever its content type. problem_text
shares the single 128-byte cap. The Huma fixture now uses a message shape
v2.39.1 actually emits, and the cap's rune boundary is pinned.
X-Lerian-Ref: 0x1
Media type tokens are case-insensitive (RFC 9110), so a body labelled
Application/Problem+JSON that does not start with "{" (an array, say) was
logged whole as problem_text. It now goes to the decode, which drops it.
README states the constraint the free-text fields rely on: services must not
interpolate personal data into 4xx detail or plain-text bodies.
X-Lerian-Ref: 0x1
A JSON array labelled text/plain still landed whole in problem_text, so an echoed errors[].value could reach the line around the struct that has no value field. A body starting with "[" now goes to the decode too, which drops it. problem_text was dropped whenever the chain returned an error, losing the reason when a custom ErrorHandler rendered text different from that error. It is now dropped only when it equals the error field's text under the same cap. X-Lerian-Ref: 0x1
Trivy's filesystem scan blocks every PR on golang.org/x/net v0.58.0: one HIGH (CVE-2026-78669) and two MEDIUM (CVE-2026-78663, CVE-2026-97032) in its http2 code, all fixed in v0.60.0. go mod tidy moves the indirect golang.org/x/crypto, sys and text up with it. X-Lerian-Ref: 0x1
chore(deps): bump golang.org/x/net to v0.60.0
feat(middleware): log the problem reason on refused-request access lines
WithProblemDetail() lets a service that keeps personal data and client input out of its 4xx details log problem_detail even when the refusal carries a code. Without it the line keeps today's behavior: a coded refusal logs only its code and title. A catalog-generic code (one code per correctable 422, the cause told apart by detail) left the access line naming the code and hiding the cause. X-Lerian-Ref: 0x1
The guarantee behind WithProblemDetail covers 4xx details; a coded 5xx keeps omitting its detail, where a raw dependency error is likelier to land. X-Lerian-Ref: 0x1
The opt-in's guarantee names the 4xx detail; a coded legacy body's message is outside it and keeps staying out of the line. X-Lerian-Ref: 0x1
…l-optin feat(middleware): opt in to log a coded problem detail
The access line now logs the error a client received, so the default list decides what an operator can read. Product decided: request identifiers log in clear, personal data stays masked. This unmasks six categories in every consuming service, hence a minor release. Clear: client_id (removed from the list), CPF/CNPJ under tax_id, taxid and tin (removed; they masked lender's fund_tax_id and administratorTaxId), and idempotency_key, idempotency_key_digest and ip_address, which the "key" and "address" entries matched by token. tipo_conta, tipo_chave_pix and nome_fantasia_ausente are enums and a flag that the new entries below would otherwise catch. Masked: senha, and Portuguese names, phone, address, bank data and Pix key as gw and lender spell them (nome, telefone, endereco, banco, agencia, conta, chave_pix and the rest), plus full_name, first_name, last_name, holder_name, mother_name and officer_name. Bare "name" stays out (service_name), and so does agent_name: lender's agentName is a collection agent's slug, not a person. X-Lerian-Ref: 0x1
…s line The access line now carries what the client was told, at every status: problem_detail is logged for coded problems too, and each errors[] entry carries its echoed value (raw JSON, 64 B cap). The value of a location whose segment names a redacted field (body.holder.email, header.Authorization) is logged as [REDACTED] with its parse error cut; object and array values are never logged, since the location mask cannot see their keys. code decodes as raw JSON: lib-commons RespondError writes the HTTP status there as a number, which failed the whole decode and left every idempotency and rate-limit refusal without a reason on the line. A 5xx body hides its cause by design. WithHTTPLogging now installs a cause slot (observability.ContextWithErrorCause) before running the chain; RecordErrorCause fills it (first wins, no slot is a no-op), and the recorded cause fills the error field when the chain returned no error. Removes WithProblemDetail (#124, shipped only in v4.7.0-beta.4): its behavior is the default now. X-Lerian-Ref: 0x1
Huma reports an unparsable body or an unknown content type at location
"body" with the raw request body as a string value, and lib-commons keeps
string values up to 256 B. The container guard only saw a leading { or [,
and "body" names no sensitive field, so a malformed JSON or a form body
carrying a client secret reached the access line. A location without a
field segment (body, query, header, path) now logs no value.
X-Lerian-Ref: 0x1
feat(redaction): apply the decided clear and masked field lists
feat(middleware): log the full refusal and the 5xx cause on the access line
With caller extra names, the plural fold took one trailing s off every token of a field name, so documents_count was judged as document_count and masked against an extra "document". A count is not PII, and lib-commons' sanitize test "document does not match documents_count" has failed since v4.5.0. For a singular outside the default vocabulary, an extra name now folds only the last token, the noun the field names: user_documents still masks against "document", documents_count does not. A token whose singular is a default-field token still folds anywhere, so the default list keeps every mask it has today (tokens_json, secrets_map): over-masking a count is harmless, logging a secret is not. X-Lerian-Ref: 0x1
…ast-token fix(redaction): fold a plural only on the last token of a field name
The target fell back to 'go test -cover ./...' without -tags=unit when scripts/check-tests.sh was missing, which it always is. Every test file carries a build tag, so that fallback compiled almost no tests and still printed [ok]. The dead script branch is deleted and the target now runs the unit suite with coverage; a failing test fails the target. X-Lerian-Ref: 0x1
NewDefaultRedactor compiled one exact-name regex per default field, so a compound name such as nome_trabalhador or customer_email reached span attributes in clear while the access log masked it through redaction.IsSensitiveField. The default redactor is now a single mask rule without a field pattern, which actionFor already resolves through IsSensitiveField: one list, one rule, for logs and spans alike. X-Lerian-Ref: 0x1
WithHTTPLogging called c.Next() with no defer, and services mount Fiber's recover outside it, so a handler panic unwound past the logger: the client got a 500 and the access log had no line for it. A deferred recover now writes the line as a 500 with the panic value as the error field, then re-panics so the outer recover still renders the response. No service has to reorder its middleware. The line-building tail moves to writeAccessLine, shared by both paths. X-Lerian-Ref: 0x1
A request fasthttp refuses before routing (a body over BodyLimit, an
unreadable request) goes to Fiber's server error handler, which runs the
Use chain with every endpoint skipped and only then renders the app's
ErrorHandler. WithHTTPLogging therefore saw an undecided response and
logged 'POST /{unmatched} 200' at Info while the client got a 413; when
the method could not be parsed the chain did not run and no line was
written at all.
LogRefusalsBeforeRouting(app, opts...) wraps the fasthttp server's error
handler: it marks the request, lets Fiber render it, then writes one
access line from the rendered response (status, method, path, the
fasthttp error, problem fields). WithHTTPLogging skips a marked request,
so a refusal is logged once and a routed request is never touched.
Services adopt it with one line after fiber.New.
X-Lerian-Ref: 0x1
A request refused before routing never resolves a route, so its access
line read /{unmatched} and an operator could not tell which upload was
refused. The line now carries the path the client called. The access
line is a log, not a metric label, so its cardinality costs nothing;
spans and metrics keep the route template.
X-Lerian-Ref: 0x1
… hook A TCP health check or a port scan that resets before one byte still reaches fasthttp's error handler, so the hook logged a made-up 'GET /' 502 at Error. It now writes nothing when no request header was read. Also: README names LogRefusalsBeforeRouting and its raw-path line; the tenant comment moved into writeAccessLine is cut to what holds for all three callers; the check-tests target is deleted with its ci and help lines (no workflow calls it and ci already runs test-unit); the test on the redactor's internal rules field is dropped, the span test proves the behavior. X-Lerian-Ref: 0x1
…nfigurable feat(middleware): make HTTP access log level configurable
golangci-lint below v2.14.0 cannot read Go 1.27.2 export data, and v2.12.x carries an upstream cache bug that leaks findings across worktrees. Pin the Makefile and the CI workflow to v2.14.0. X-Lerian-Ref: 0x1
chore(ci): bump golangci-lint to v2.14.0

Review comments at @docs/metrics-contract.md:
- Line 15: Update the `responses_4xx.by_tenant` and `responses_5xx.by_tenant`
catalog rows in the metrics contract to include `http.response.status_code` and
remove the outdated claim that exact status codes are excluded. Update the
corresponding README instrument list descriptions for both counters to reflect
that status-code label.
- Line 15: Correct the tenant-growth margin in docs/metrics-contract.md (15-15)
to state that fourfold growth from 264 sets yields 1,056 sets, still well below
the 2,000-set default. Make the corresponding correction in
middleware/telemetry.go (713-715), updating the same claim about the OTel SDK
limit.
Review comments at @redaction/sensitive_fields.go:
- Line 98: Update IsSensitiveField and NewDefaultRedactor so field names and
default sensitive-field entries are normalized consistently for diacritics,
matching accented and unaccented forms such as “endereço” and “endereco.” Add
tests covering both forms, including “agência.”
Review comments at @tracing/otel.go:
- Line 985: Update sanitizeSpanMessage to redact password=value and token=value
credentials across the full message before truncating it, so credentials in the
retained error tail are also removed; preserve the existing Bearer/Basic
redaction and truncation behavior.

The per-tenant 4xx and 5xx counters carry the exact http.response.status_code, but the README and the metric contract still described them as status-free and quoted budgets for a schema that no longer exists. Document the current labels, compute the budget per instrument (request counter 1,500 sets, latency histogram 150 sets, error counters bounded by observed route+code pairs at 264, 1,056 at four times the tenants, under the 2,000 default), split the counter budget formula between the request counter and the error counters, and use explicit_boundary_count+3 for the histogram multiplier.
