The mod value box is always put into placeholder rather than the typed value.

This is an upstream issue (arnog/mathlive#1565). And due to the design of MathLive, it requires "non-trivial amount of changes".

As a workaround, you can add the following inline shortcut:

    "pmod": "\\quad(\\operatorname{mod}\\ #?)"

and insert by typing pmod instead of (mod

Edit: Never mind, I realized that this issue is different from what I want to solve. What I want to do here is just preventing empty boxes as in the screenshot from become \placeholder{}s. Should I open another issue?

Actually, the MathfieldElement.getValue() function have an argument called output format, which can be "latex-without-placeholders", and

according to the document

I wonder if it can be utilized to avoid the placeholders.

I played a bit with this change, and found that it won't expand user defined macros. Anyway, I don't actually use macros, and the extra \placeholder{}s are really annoying, so that's fine at least for me?

@proItheus Thanks for the comment. However, due to arnog/mathlive#1565, the most optimal output format is latex-expanded. For example:
