hmm i plugged it back in to ps2 and it appears to have updated. whenever i plug it in to PC to run PSBBN script it says update available and then the error is produced

No, the update failed. For some reason, the updater could not write to your drive. I have never seen this before and have no idea what could cause that.

Have you tried all the steps in the troubleshooting guide?
